  • Posted to Productivity tool Notion nearly died in 2015 — but its unique design process helped save it. Here's the tactics they used., in reply to Andrew C , Mar 08, 2019

Agreed with this. Not really any tactics other than:

“Our general philosophy is to go crazy with permutations,” he says. “If the taste is there, which you can grow by studying typography and the giants of industry, you can churn out versions until you find the best one.”

Which fwiw, I whole-heartedly agree with. I even buy Figma is best suited to do this. But it's definitely more puff piece than resource despite the promising title. Still, though - enjoyed the short read.

It's in the cloud, super easy to share, versioning no longer matters, great for collaborative whiteboarding/designing. Devs prefer it, no need for zeplin, shared library is really good, prototyping is just as good or better.

I think is is really impressive and well-documented. And what I'm about to say next is not meant to be critical or cynical - it's just another perspective.

Personally, I struggle to spend time optimizing my workflow to this extent. My gut-feel cost/benefit analysis says that in the time I'd spend creating a new efficiency and documenting it, I could've done a ton of actual design at 1-5% slower rate than with this new tool that will be outdated/obsolete pretty quickly.

I've also found that as soon as I'm settled in a workflow I've optimized, the market shifts and a new tool replaces the one I've invested in. For example, I haven't opened Sketch in 6 months because Figma is just better for me and where I work.

I don't always agree with Eli, nor do I always understand his motives and/or the value of his work, but I'm glad there's someone in the design world dedicated to critique for its own sake. I think it's a healthy thing in an industry like ours.

That's the case with a lot of senior, well-known, influencer-type designers, though. Isn't it possible to disagree with his point without trying to invalidate his career?

This looks really well done and I don't mean to diminish, but if you had to bet on a horse wouldn't you go with Figma here? Figma works anywhere, has collab features, prototyping, imports from sketch, etc.

I guess I'm curious why I should switch from sketch to Lunacy versus Figma.

Loved this one like the earlier ones too. There's a lack of content around team dynamics, getting buy-in, and driving change as a team (not as an individual). This one really hit home.

More "art" than "design" (subjective definitions of course) but I love it. Interactive music video.

In her case, it's a selling point. While perhaps you aren't looking for culture fit when looking for a designer, many larger companies/brands are.
