Man, I wish my situation would allow for me to relocate to PDX. Great atmosphere, great people, great beer, more snow, and the Trail Blazers.
Thankfully, I'm just up the road in Olympia WA.
What are some of the ways by which you track your data in a raw form? How do you aggregate it?
What prompts you to determine - what - to capture?
Pretty much. And where is the line drawn in "copying a style" versus "inspiration"? I seem to recall Apple paying, after the fact, a substantial sum to the Swiss railways over a certain Clock in their iOS ...
In addition to working in Operations here at LayerVault, I spend a lot of time on an ambulance, delivering patients to an Emergency Department that runs on Epic, and it's quite ... horrific. Absolutely horrible UI, and there would be very little surprise that information could easily get lost, possibly critical. The UI is amateur, ugly, and complex.
I should submit some screenshots from Tiburon (who supplies our Fire Deparments with mobile data terminal software). We're talking an embedded IE7 engine in an ugly app with quite possibly the world's worst map UI (picture working on a ToughBook in a moving fire engine with a map that works in only a single context at once - pan, zoom, scroll, select), for one.
For irony, if you go all the way back, I think the first 20 or so images that Unsplash ever released were near identical to these: Moleskine, latte, MBP, reclaimed wood desk/table, rinse, repeat.
If you use a Thunderbolt Display, you can also use Twelve South's Backpack - http://www.twelvesouth.com/product/backpack-for-imac - for "mounting" the Mini behind it. Honestly, your single biggest issue is "get an SSD".
Invest in lenses - for Canon, the "enthusiast" lenses - the L lenses are professional, and perhaps overkill if you're just beginning, and the kit lenses are cheap.
Camera bodies evolve, glass doesn't (or at least is much more slow to do).
Important: remember, some of the most iconic images of our time were shot with a camera that you could buy at Goodwill for $10.
Digital will let you practice a whole lot more. Seek out books and help on composition.
Lightroom is excellent. But try to get things as right as possible in camera.
Personally - I use a 5D Mk III with a 50mm f/1.4, 24-70 f/2.8, and 70-200 f/2.8.
Also, invest in a good flash, not onboard.
Seconded. I love fastmail.fm - I can also clarify that at least on iOS 7, I can send via my 'personality' addresses.
