Thank you! The photo shoot was done in one day but the preparation for it took a few weeks.

Hi Paul, pretty awesome that you've got to work on some cool products.

My general feedback for your portfolio is that you have images that don't really communicate that much information since it's hard to read the text in the images. For example, the post-it note photos don't really say that much other than you use post-it notes to facilitate your workshops. It would be more important to me to see the information clearly which could be done through a graphic that looks like a post-it structure or to create an easy-to-digest graphic with the findings from the workshop.

For Babble, great job with implementing motion into the app and designing the process for handing off the designs to the engineers. But I think the case study would be stronger if you had examples of the motion elements from the app and you could also tie it into the motion graphs since some people might not understand what a motion graph is.

In regards to the experience of the site, not sure if you need to hide the nav in a menu for desktop considering the site is so minimal already. If you wanted to continue that simple and minimal approach, then I would consider making the nav and the site more straightforward. The nav could entail About, Case Studies, and Articles where each link goes to a section on the homepage. The extra two pieces of info about you (location and email) can be placed in the about section.

Great job and thanks for sharing your portfolio!

  • Posted to What do you use to develop animated elements for your websites? (CSS-only, Adobe Animate, Bodymovin'?), Oct 16, 2018

My process depends on what I'm trying to achieve with animations for the web. If there is no interactivity and if I can create it as GIF, then I would create my assets in Illustrator and then import it into After Effects to animate.

I haven't used Spirit for a project yet but did play around with it when it first launched. Pretty cool tool since you can use a timeline editor to create your animations and see it live on the site.

But it sounds like you're working with diagrams. If you're diagrams are interactive, then this Javascript library might be worth looking into d3js.org.

Hey Ethan great job with putting together your portfolio. Really digging some of your work, especially the branding for Google Go North.

One suggestion for the experience of the site is to have a way to navigate between projects when you're on a project page. When someone reaches at the end of the project, it would be nice to have a way to easily navigate to the previous or next project oppose to going back to the homepage or clicking on the hamburger menu.

In term of the presentation of the work, I would consider trying to make the thumbnails a little more consistent. I find when there's consistency in thumbnails, it shows attention to detail and strong visual skills. Something to think about is that the thumbnail doesn't necessarily need to show the entire work since it acts as a preview to the project itself. The goal of thumbnail for me is to entice the visitor to click on it and usually that means making it as visually appealing as possible while accurately representing the project.

Lastly, I think there's some really good stuff in your Misc page but it's getting lost, especially on mobile. Your doodles are pretty awesome and I would consider making this page into 3D Doodles and showcasing more 3D work that relates to visual design.

Again, great job Ethan and all the best with your last year of studies.

AfterEffects is good if you really want smooth animations and high quality GIFs and if you have the design file to animate them. If you don't, Quicktime is my go-to tool for recording sites on desktop and mobile. Sometimes I'll make edits to the cursor directly through the code either to replace it with something custom or have it removed completely. Once I've edited the recordings, I export them as a GIF in Photoshop.
