I've tried Confluence in the past for this purpose and found that it was too limiting. It would only show static images and not real, interactive patterns.
WordPress worked a lot better. I've used custom fields or a custom field plugin for lightweight documentation and a private CodePen environment imported into the WordPress page to show pattern examples.
Pattern Lab and styleguides.io may help too.
Wow, the 'Create' section has a clever use of extending the experience to a second screen. You can connect your mobile device with a unique URL and and paint your primary screen using motion captured from the mobile device. Reminds me of http://tangible.media.mit.edu/project/thaw.
You can use something like IPVEO to capture your paper sketches in real time and pair it with Google Hangouts or Skype to share.
