Seems to me like an experiment in storytelling and value. I'm guessing they were inspired by learnings from http://significantobjects.com . Basically the experiment is: Buy junk for a dollar or two, have people write purely fictional stories associated with them, and sell them for significantly more money than you could get otherwise.
