Saying that it works like that everywhere is not a good reason for not pushing back on these behaviours. We are designer, we keep repeating that we can change the world and then we raise our hands when it comes to important issues like this one? A member of this community left because she did not feel welcome and that's just sad.

I can highly recommend http://learning-gardens.co and the Slack channel. It’s a small and solid community of people. It’s not as design-news centered as Designernews but it has a couple of channels dedicated to design and groups (as the name suggests) for learning and studying.
