Definitely use Affinity Designer. It's theoretically possible to use Sketch for print material (I used to before I discovered Affinity), but lack of CMYK and measurement units - e.g. inches - made it challenging. Affinity is the way to go!

That makes sense! Even from that perspective, I'd agree with Mitch's comment above that Sketch's vector capabilities leave something to be desired when it comes to complex shapes/icons.
Unless I'm still misunderstanding, I thought that's exactly what Join Curve does? Here's a video showing how it works. Agreed about having to click a button... Normally I would say just set a custom keyboard shortcut in System Preferences, but in this case there isn't an actual menu item for the action so I don't think it would work.
Sketch is nowhere near being able to replace Illustrator, but I don't think it was ever intended to. Affinity Designer, on the other hand, seriously rivals Illustrator. Either way I don't think it has to be one or the other -- Sketch fulfills a different purpose than Illustrator or Affinity Designer, and it's a useful tool in it's own right for basic UI design where the other apps would be overkill.
I have the same path-closing problem in Sketch all the time, it's so annoying! The only reliable solution I've found is to go to Layer > Paths > Close Path. Also, you mentioned not being able to split and join shapes/segments in Affinity. Unless I'm misunderstanding, you should be able to do that with the 'break curve' and 'join curve' action buttons?
For anyone curious how it compares to Sketch, here is an overview! https://medium.com/@debjohnson/affinity-designer-sketch-and-why-you-dont-have-to-choose-9ae64275490c

Yes!!!! Affinity is absolutely phenomenal, and offers the only glimpse of hope for an Adobe-free future for those who need the power and extended capabilities of Illustrator and Photoshop that the likes of Sketch/Pixelmator -- while excellent apps in their own right -- simply do not provide. I encourage all Affinity enthusiasts to vote for it as best app of the year here! https://thenetawards.com/vote/app/affinity-designer/
