I would argue quite the opposite. Given HTML5 options like srcset and the picture element, it's possible to not serve Retina images only to devices that need them. Excess pixels in images is the #1 driver for page bloat, so it can have a big effect on your user experience.
We've got a nice tutorial on srcset here: https://docs.imgix.com/tutorials/responsive-images-srcset-imgix
Here's a little something from the team at imgix that I think would resonate well with the DN audience. Let us know what you think!
It works best with blog posts or news articles. Check out this example from the Guardian: http://bit.ly/1TlhEMq

Hello DN,
To show off all of the cool things made possible with imgix, we put together Sandbox. Sandbox is the easiest way to build and edit imgix URLs.
To start off, we've included a few images from the fine folks over at Unsplash, as well as a few more in-depth examples.
If you have any questions, we’re more than happy to answer them!
Obligatory:
FWIW, imgix can also do this, and can also output color info as JSON:
Hi Ryan,
It doesn't take much more than just getting started with a vanilla Ember app, really. Everything else you get for free.
For getting started with Ember, just install ember-cli:
npm install -g ember-cli ember new my-static-site
More info here: http://emberjs.com/
Hi folks,
We're listening and looking at better and better ways to do search. Keep the suggestions coming. :)

On the quality drop: we are a bit aggressive there but provide you with a few options with the image picker. You should be able to find something that straddles the line between quality and file size.
Good catch on the sprited PNG. That is not a case we currently account for!
