Never thought I would ever dislike a piece of Pentagram work... ugh.
Really? They have been doing the same type of work for decades now.
Waldy is right. Pentagram has ruined quite a few brands by now, yet people still think they're some kind of design gods, for some particular reason.
This seems excessively extreme. Their work isn't groundbreaking, and this Slack logo is pretty bad but hardly the death knell of branding.
I never said branding is dead. Don't know how you got that from my comment.
Looking back in comparison, the logo was already good
The lowercase "a" in that font is bothering me.
It is one ugly letterform. What's up with that eye?
ooh see now THAT'S a valid criticism, I didn't notice that at first but that's gnarly. I'm disappointed in how vapid and cranky most of this design criticism is - we can at least pick at details like this that our trade gives us the skill to look for!
Shockingly bad. Good take from John Gruber about it: https://daringfireball.net/2019/01/pentagramslackrangeofpossibilities
Thanks for this. He links to a twitter post by Louie who actually made a decent version:
Then Linus presented a great version too!
Just as janky imho, if anyone else had done it no one would be saying it was decent
Actually, I have no idea who Louie or Linus are. I just thought these were both better than Slack's new logo. I mean, at least these keep the hash sign and the rotation. The new logo is much more of a departure from their old one.
I can't NOT see a swastika in the negative space.
they keep calling it an octothorpe, but i don't think it reads as one at all.
Hehe I reacted to that one too. I would not have included that sketch.
Yeah that's embarrassingly bad. 1996 called and wanted its logo back. Might as well include a stock photo of someone in a suit surfing on a keyboard, tie flapping in the wind, to complete the look.
I refuse to believe those alternate routes were ever serious choices
I guess salting those truely art-less exploration designs in there kind of takes the sting away from what they ended up with... but man, i'd be pissed if i paid for this.
