Best web app for doing remote user testing?

over 4 years ago from , UI/UX Designer

Hey all, I'm looking for a good solution for remote user testing (both moderated, and unmoderated). I tried out Lookback and had a terrible experience (lots of disconnecting, glitches in the videos, and couldn't get users into the app a couple times), so probably not going to go with that.

Any suggestions on what I should use? I was considering taking a look at User Zoom for example.

For unmoderated remote user testing, I recommend Maze (https://maze.design/)

For moderated, I recommend Confrere (https://confrere.com/features)

For the last couple of projects I'm using (https://www.loop11.com/) and I had great experience.

I created UserBob to be an affordable, unmoderated, remote user testing service.

UserBrain (https://userbrain.net) for non-moderated remote user testing and Ping Pong (https://hellopingpong.com/) for moderated tests.

(https://www.userlook.co ) It's fairly new but I've had great experience with them. The service is really simple and they also have a free tool where you can do unmoderated testing with your own users. I've found their recruited service to be much cheaper than other options

I use trymyui.com because I need help with the recruiting and screening side of usability testing. Like Andrew C mentioned this can get dicey with professional testers, but if I ever feel the participant is too disingenuous I ask for a replacement and TryMy is quick to add a credit back free of charge.

I don't particularly trust Usertesting.com. Their testers seem to be overly kind and diligent when muddling through a feature or product. It also doesn't give you an opportunity to collect secondary research about the person. It's too much $$$ for the results they give you.

About this time last year I switched to Zoom (not User Zoom, just Zoom the conference tool). You can set up a room ahead of time for unmoderated testing and record the session (which conveniently emails you when the video is done).

Another feature of Zoom which is useful is turning on cloud hosting. Here Zoom can process the video in to a transcript. The data engineer has connected these transcripts from ZOOOOM and other sources (Salesforce, Zendesk, etc) in to a keyword searchable data warehouse. This way designers, PMs, support, etc. can find previous user sessions from our structureless data.

I highly recommend Zoom. It's helped us up our game with a few of these hidden gem features. And then you're only paying for one tool that the entire company can use for remote work or even just recording regular meetings.

This is better than buying expensive services like Usertesting.com. If you don't get fat results out of a user test it's very easy for testing in general to be framed as a waste of resources and time.

I've only had experience with Usertesting.com to do unmoderated remote testing, and it was pretty good, the platform worked well, creating tests is intuitive and the pool of participants provided very useful and honest feedback.

They say it can be used for moderated tests and in depth interviews along with a number of other methods, but haven't had a chance to try it.

the only downside for us was that beyond the trial it was too expensive for our needs, £60,000 per year if I remember correctly.
