Is DN becoming a place for spam?

over 4 years ago from , Lead designer @ Sony Creative Center, Studio Nordic

I've noticed less and fewer questions and more "I have this template for sale" or "version 6 of app" is filling up DN headlines.

This place feels less like a community each day and more of a way to advertise to designers.

Maybe I'm getting old or am old.

Yes. DN has become a dumping ground for sports spam, stupid list articles, people plugging their blogs, Medium, Dribbble or Behance posts, and all kinds of other junk content, as I mentioned two weeks ago.

(Oh, I forgot the people who post self-promotional content, delete it after a few days, and then post it again to keep it at the top of the recent page.)

I visit almost daily, as every so often there is a gem being posted. But I reckon there is only something worth clicking at MOST twice a week.

Face it folks, this place has been going gently downhill for quite some time.

This site died as soon as it moved to open registration. That combined with poor moderation and spam control make this place uninteresting to visit. The only thing that keeps me looking at articles here is the Panda browser dashboard.

    Should designers spam tho?

Jup. Also a ton of 'x times the best x for x'-list articles that 9/10 times go to some random (usually personal) website and the other 1/10 times it's a medium article and it's the writer posting it.

A week or 2 or so ago someone asked DN 'what are the best designers to follow on twitter' which was a great question imo. I think a day later the same person wrote a list-article based on the comments on that tread, posted it here and received a ton of upvotes. Bums me out tbh.

Oh forgot to mention the new grad bubble kids who can’t take any kind of critisism. I even personally got dismissed for writing a positive critisim. How dense ppl can be to get annoyed for something postive? I could able to post links if the search have worked but you just have to believe me lol. I don’t know how to fix people, but those guys mean more clicks, more click means more $$$$

So propabaly dn might go much worse in the future and turn into just a billboard next.

You're spot on. People here can not take criticism and anything but an extremely positive comment will get you downvoted. I'd love to see those people work in an ad agency. It's be hilarious.

Hehe yea, they all end up and grew up at those kind of places at some point -if they actually want to design for real.

And just outright spam about roofing solutions and weight loss pills. A lot of spam accounts being created and posting immediately- I wonder if we couldn't have some kind of quarantine where accounts have to be x days old to comment and X+n days old to start threads

This has been mentioned by the mod team to Tiny. Also the suggestion that karma has more of an impact on who can post/comment/vote etc.

Is there any indication that these suggestions actually go anywhere, or are they ignored?

I personally try to ignore everything you write.

They are raised with Matt (one of the community managers), beyond this I have no visibility of what happens however I'm assured they are looking at ways to improve DN, but every feature must be thought out in depth for the good of the community as well as the business.

I can see dn implemented downvote but it just doesn’t work. It’s only to change karma points. I mean if there’s no action going to happen for lower karma then why would you have that function. Downvote is to hide shit content. Not just change the numbers. I also can’t comprehend how could DN is struggling to implement functions other than advertising?

Ai believe other problem of dn is the attitude management. I feel like decisions are assumed within the “management” inner circle -for the community. I know that you’ve hired a guy to posts that he cares about the community, but still it doesn’t feel like you’re trying hard. If you want a community driven product, you have to let your community shape your product. Yeah dangerous for your ads revenue. But that’s how community stuff works. Do you know why reddit has so little ads? Because that’s what users asked for. And even they suggested to remove Reddit’s ads from Adblocker lists to keep it how THE COMMINITY wanted.

I mean it’s very easy to get in touch with us in 2018. Why don’t you facilitate webinars? Why don’t you create a discord server? Why don’t you fix the search? People are trying to communicate with each other. If you don’t engage that with your users, eventually the place is bound to filled with spiderwebs.

    Just my 2 cents.

I'm glad we have the downvoting. It's the one tool we have to sink junk content, as there does not seem to be any curation or proactive moderation on the site. Any moderation seems to be reactive, and only after something is reported. The owners of the site need to actually want to make the content better. As it is now, they don't seem to want to do that. The fact that the dedicated community manager, who was brought on a little while back and who is now gone, isn't a good sign either.

So why did this thread removed from top stories? It might have the highest upvotes excluding the paid Invision blog posts.

This topic actually showed up on musli, invisions paste board and it must have caught their eye. DN biggest advertiser.

This answers my thoughts that DN is basically dead. It’s run purely for profit. Not the community.

So what now? Quote Bender and say “I'm Going To Build My Own Theme Park With Blackjack and Hookers”.

It's our community. It's up to us to post content that fosters growth, discussion and benefits each other.

That's one half. The other half is low-quality and spam posts should be moderated so the quality content has a chance to be seen.

I walk always straight to the ASK Section to help people. Sometimes i look on the frontpage to gather new tools or something but it is always show or sponsor or anything related to a new version with a new features of some service i don't use...

Sometimes, but just sometimes there is something interessting on the frontpage...

Spam, combined with downvoting conversations has killed this board. Who wants to post to a place where people only agree with you and then spam you with sports streaming sites. It's not rocket science why this board is kind of a joke.

Downvote doesn’t do anything. It’s just number. If it’d work, there wouldn’t be spam at all. Also I think you might be confused a bit. So you don’t want to hang around with same minded people but you also don’t want downvote because you might be afraid to get negative feedback?

Also did you just write rocket science?

I'm not confused at all, you might be projecting tho. I'm saying downvoting makes people not want to post controversial/different opinions because of the negative association with potential downvotes, so you get stuck in an echo chamber of the same opinions being perceived as positive, which in turn kills conversation.
