How do you go about building the right thing?

almost 5 years ago from

How have you gone about learning or practicing how to quickly figure out the right thing to build and build it for users to quickly use and re-use ?

I tend to steer away from discussion (trying something new here) and tend to read books such as Zero to One, Lean UX, Sense & Respond, Hooked and a wide range of O'Riley books.

Whats your approach?

What makes you think there's a quick way to do this? All evidence seems to indicate it's a painful, pretty random, and non-reproducible process…

The real secret if that nearly every "right thing" someone built was the "wrong thing" for the first few years of its existence.

The more times you do it wrong, the faster you will be at identifying what makes something right. Basically there is no substitute for number of hours doing actual design work.

I wish the process was easier, so far I've seen time and time again it's either having inside knowledge yourself being deeply involved and networked in an industry, or constant iteration within your space of choice continuously talking to users.

I'd be curious to learn about which designers are figuring out what to build that quickly gets traction in their respective market.

"Jobs to be Done" is pretty interesting.
