Have to try the keyboard before I'll even consider it.

I wouldn't buy the thing without knowing that people have tested the keyboard for like 3 months. 2 co-workers had to replace their keyboard twice already, and one of them already has a faulty space bar again.

Same, I've sent my 2016 Pro with touch bar in twice for key replacements and once for a logic board replacement. Worst MacBook I've had.

I haven't had keyboard issues, but the touchbar is incredibly useless

Yup, there's no way I'm considering it until the keyboard is confirmed better or changed altogether. I'm not messing around with $2000+.

I would pay extra just to get rid of the touch bar. I need escape to be a physical key damnit.

I want to dig it, but my early 2013 mbp has the exact same specs and is purring along just fine.

I feel you. Also, I'm not ready to give up my HDMI port for client presentations, and my DisplayPort for my Apple Cinema Display.

My $20 Amazon dongle has hdmi and I use a cheap DisplayPort to usb-c for my external display.

Haha, yeah I mean I don’t LOVE using a dongle, but I honestly don’t think its that big of a deal. It was cheap, its always attached to my MacBook, and it gives me 3 USB ports, an HDMI adapter, and a USB-C pass through so it doesn’t take up the port.

when people say that, here’s what I hear: I paid for a bunch of extra stuff that I also have to carry around everywhere just to get the same functionality that came standard in the older models.

$30 isn’t really much when I spent $3,000 on a computer. I dont love only having USB-C, but I’ll take the trade off for faster data transfer speeds and an overall higher performance computer. Of course I wish there was some USB 3.0/3.1 ports, but it doesn’t make that much of a difference in my day to day.

My dongle looks good and is always attached to my MacBook, so it doesn’t really feel like I have to carry anything extra around.

I actually get a big benefit from dongles. When I'm at my desk I'm hooked up to a bunch of peripherals and an external monitor. When I need to bring my laptop to a meeting it now takes just two unplugs to get rid of everything attached instead of multiple different cables that were a huge hassle to unplug and replug every time.

Eh, I had an early 2013 maxed out rMBP and my new(ish) 2017 is noticeably faster and more capable in almost every way.

Looks like a Radeon Pro 560x is equivalent to a 1050ti. Not very good for a premium 2018 laptop.

Which laptop do you recommend which has superior graphics?

For windows you can configure anything. If you're wanting to get into VR, I'd recommend a 1060 or above. They better the GPU, the higher the FPS which reduces sickness.

...not very good? This thing is meant for professional use and that card is honestly pretty hard core for pro use. It's just under the performance(10%) of the more expensive Surface Book 2. Meanwhile it can be paired with a six core, Core i9 CPU with a damn-near 5ghz turbo boost, raid 0 pci-e SSDs out of the box, DDR4 Ram..It's pretty nutty and don't forget that a Mac running Metal gets faster performance per watt than Nvidia cards on Windows.

            • John Williams, 5 years ago

I mean, it depends on what you're doing. Video editing, I'm sure it's fine. For VR development, you need a 1060 or above. The fact that Apple doesn't have it as an option for their $5k-$6k Macbooks is ridiculous. A $1k, windows laptop will get you a 1060.

Either you get a slightly better performing computer and have to use Windows or you get a decent computer and get to use macOS. I'l take the performance hit and use macOS, thanks. Sure, it might take me a little longer to render a video on those rare occasions I need to do so but what are you people doing with laptops that require workstation level performance? You are constrained to the limitations of the screen and if you're going to connect it to an external monitor at your desk you can get an eGU to boost performance for graphics intensive applications.

I believe that's why they've been evangelizing eGPUs for over a year - which seems reasonable given the size/thermal constraints of a laptop.

Last year at WWDC they sold a sonnet eGPU kit for developers, eGPU support became official in public releases earlier this year, and they partnered with blackmagic to introduce the blackmagic eGPU https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HM8Y2VC/A/blackmagic-egpu .

eGPU vendors have also been trying to make slightly more portable solutions, like the Sonnet eGFX breakaway puck.

I'm still waiting for an Air with a retina display. I miss the Air, best computer I've ever had. Fingers crossed that they don't try to stick a touch bar in it, wouldn't mind touch ID though. Btw Apple, SD cards are still a thing :)

That's basically what the MacBook is, right? I think the Air will be phased out in the next update of the MacBook.

Personally I'm waiting for a price decrease on the MacBook or a significant spec upgrade before I give up my air ....

You're right the Macbook does cover most of it but like you said, it needs a bit of a performance boost to really be a viable option (though I'm confident that it would still be enough for my Sketch needs). I just wish it had at least one more usb-c port and an SD card slot too.

The 13" Airs weighed 2.96lbs, and the new 13" Pro weighs 3.02lbs... it's essentially the same weight with retina and its guts are on steroids. What's the beef?

Significantly better battery life, more ports (including an SD card slot for expandable storage), magsafe, a quiter and more comfortable keyboard...

There's a lot to love in the Macbook Air.

32gb should be a standard in 15' model... and they are charging 480 euros for it :(

But other than that - I think it's finally time for an upgrade from 2015 model.

What I don't get: Is this the real new Macbook Pro? I thought this is just the yearly spec bump, not really worth talking about. But now I even got a newsletter telling me about that. Was that the same for previous spec bumps?

    0 points
    • Darren Treat, 5 years ago

It is more than specs, it's a new third gen keyboard, True Tone display and a pretty large spec rework (Bigger battery, DDR4 Ram, Two more cores in every model (Huge performance jump), Raid 0 SSDs), and finally the T2 co-processor for the new secure boot and 'Hey Siri'. Same shell, everything in it is different. The 15 inch is basically an iMac Pro, portable. The core i9 does nearly 5Ghz in turbo.

Okay, damn ... that means this is the next "big" thing and we'll probably be stuck with that keyboard, the gimmicky Touchbar, the missing ports and that old case design (admittedly, it's not bad) for the time being.

        Thanks for explaining, btw.!

Honestly, I seriously doubt you will ever see a 'legacy' port on a MacBook Pro ever again. Wait... Let me change that: I doubt you'll see a legacy port on any MacBook ever again.

Damn, that was brutal. Don't shatter my world like that! But yeah, you are probably right. I'm just wondering, why they are repeating the Firewire debacle all over again. The technology is right, but they are again 2-3 years early.

They haven't fixed the keyboard so absolutely no buy from me, I really hate this damn keyboard and so many of my keys are starting to fail or have inconsistent feelings (some click very loud, some feel like mush) I haven't even had the thing a year and if you could see it the thing looks brand new I really look after my machines but this keyboard is just so fragile.

Not to mention if you type a lot your hands get really tired because you have to bash the keys much harder than normal due to the lack of travel.

Guys relax, you are not only paying for the hardware but for the user experience – that includes shopping in-store or online, apple support, after sales service, the OS UX. You got to remember that.

Apple support has really gone down the drain in recent years. I remember in ~2010 going to the Apple Store with an issue on my device, outside of warranty, and they just replaced it. No questions asked. Nowadays I feel like there’s no more customer service, I have really bad experiences at the Apple Store. I recently went to go pick up an iPhoneX, pre-paid for online at Apple.com, and they wouldn’t let me pick it up when I arrived with my credentials because I paid with the company card — and it’s MY company. Maybe the customer support staff does not have a concept that someone under 30 can run their own business but I had to throw a fit and threaten a refund just to pick up the device that I had already paid for.

Apple support? Where is the apple support for the crappy keyboard? You need to wait 1 month for them to repair a keyboard on a 1 year old $2k laptop.

starting a new job next month. should i ask for one? or is the 'no-touchbar' better?

The specs on the new one are slightly better, but touchbars are a pain in the ass. My wifes keyboard is slightly fucked and some of the keys dont work. Also it feels a bit weird to use. Also, on a top spec 13" the battery life is abysmal. On top of that now the rear two USB-C ports have stopped working. Finally it doesnt charge when the lid is shut, and when the lid shuts the computer doesnt go into sleep mode, so yeah, go for the older one if you can. The new ones are shite.

Yep, its juuuuust over a year old, unfortunatley she is uber busy, constantly. She can barely afford to have an hour off, let alone a few days of downtime to set a new computer up and mess around with apple trying to fix her Macbook. Her old 13 MBP retina was flawless, this one... not so much.

Total bummer. Does she backup to iCloud or any other service? When I get a new MacBook it takes an hour tops to set it up. Then I just let it sit overnight to download everything stored on the cloud.

Apple might make a special exception since its just over a year old. This is the reason I always get a computer with AppleCare+, plus I find that the cost is offset due to higher resale value when it’s time to upgrade.

Last time I had to bring my laptop into the shop, I just purchased a brand new MacBook and returned it when the work on mine was completed.

No. We've got everything backed up on external harddrives, but she is crazy busy, so in the last 4 months (when these problem start really building up) we havent had time to get into an apple store, due to eitherbeing in New Zealand, where there are none, or travelling around and not being in the same country/place for more than a week. But yeah, shes got a break for the next three weeks so I plan on taking it into the apple store. To be honest this is one of the reasons why i dont mind paying more for apple products - the after purchase support is extremely good.

Apple doesn't put ports in the rear of the computer, the screen hinge would get in the way.
