How to make the TouchBar useful (BTT lets you fully override it)

over 2 years ago from , http://meet-cristian.com

I didn't know you could do that with BetterTouchTool, but I'm really glad I discovered this so my TouchBar can now be useful. There's a repo of examples here and the settings to achieve that are here and here

Here's my setup: ImageImage

Link to the presets

I also want to add a group with common apps and sites, but I'm happy with the setup I got so far. You can set it to change to something else for every app, but for me it's going to be more useful if it's always the same and I can build the muscle memory for every control.

Touch Bar feels like the elephant in the room right now. Is it going to survive the keyboard redesign that has to drop this fall.

I mean it's only on two machines in their entire lineup, didn't even make it to their premium 10K pro machine and the 13/15 inch it exists on needs a complete keyboard rethink.

Wouldn't be the first time Apple has completely ditched an "iconic" design 2 years after it came out.

I’m glad they try new things, but I’ll be even happier when the Touch Bar goes away. Fingers crossed for an improved keyboard soon.

Definitely happy they're trying new things. They have a lot of catching up to do against the Surface and Matebook lineups.

I do wonder if there's some way to salvage it by adding it as a new element to the keyboard rather than replacing the function row. Then it wouldn't need to do quite so much and could be more useful to the app that's in focus.

As you can see in the picture above, there's plenty of space above the keyboard. And it would be totally fine for an external keyboard to have both rows.

The way to salvage it is by introducing touch screen Macs.

Anything less is delaying the inevitable.

Did you guys suffer from battery drain after using BetterTouchTool? I tried few months ago but I gave up since my MacBook become so hot and the battery drained.

I just hope they end up releasing a 15" without Touchbar. Apple doesn't admit mistakes very often. It will be interesting to see if they correct it.
