1) It's a joke... and yes it's been done before. The later can be said in regards to just about anything.

2) it's quite condescending to tell people how they should be spending their time... that would be like me telling you that you shouldn't waste your time writing pointless and invaluable comments

3) where did you see or read that this was done in a hackathon? I must have missed that part... or you're just making assumptions

All in all... I'm pretty positive it was meant to be taken lightheartedly, which isn't very hard to do. Skim for a minute, laugh... move on.

"something useful" - expression is not just useful, it is necessary. Just because something doesn't make money or gather accumulate an audience (to monetarily milk later), doesn't mean its useless.
