Ugh, the click-baity title here is frustrating. "Instagram just showed Apple how to fix the volume slider on iPhone X" would have been better.
Also, I'm pretty sure that Apollo did this before Instagram did; Apple needs to follow suit either way.
Agreed. I thought burger usually do better articles than this. Slightly unrelated, but youtube app on iOS have implemented their own non-obstructive volume slider before this whole notch thing.
Not to mention when you press the volume and the system one doesn't show then you're not sure if its even working till you notice the bespoke per-app slider.
It is mentioned a number of times in the comments but deserves to be mentioned again here. This does nothing to solve the poor design of the notch, it merely aims to find function for the space but does nothing to reduce the notch visibility.
Awful clickbait title... Man
Really irks me that the notch isn't superimposed on screen recordings
Then again you have Android's volume changer, which is pretty much unobtrusive and allows you to quickly change any volume setting. Either it be alarm, notifications or media.
If i get a cent for every time I try to increase music volume in my music app but increase my ring volume instead i'd be at least $1.00 richer
Love having that level of control in Android. It is so much clearer.

iPhone X notch: a poor design decision that shouldn't be there in the first place.
I think it's a pretty poor solution to be honest, they've made the volume bar so small, that unless you're increasing it by a good few steps, you barely notice it moving.
guy! please report this kind of clickbait articles.
The volume slider only pops up WHEN YOU PRESS A HARDWARE BUTTON ON THE SIDE OF THE PHONE!! This does NOT "fix the notch" nor does it make the notch more useful. After a coupe months with my iPhone X I don't even notice the notch anymore. Most people complaining about the notch either don't have an iPhone X (but probably want one) and have never used one extensively or they will never have an iPhone X (but probably still want one secretly) and have never used one extensively (playing with one at the Apple Store does NOT make you an expert on the notch).
The only fix to the volume controls on the iPhone are access to all the various volume settings on one location. I have trying to figure out when and how to adjust music volume vs ringer volume vs notification volume, etc. If apple needs to do anything they need to break out all the various volume options when a user long presses (force touch) the volume slider in the control panel. This little widget in Instagram doesn't do anything other then make it more difficult to see the volume state is changing.
Post-purchase rationalization is a hell of a thing
No, the notch really does disappear after like 10 minutes of using the phone. Every single iPhone X owner I know has said the same.
However the volume popup IS annoying on any iOS device.
I don't doubt it disappears, but the real question: do you want it there? Like it?
It's like a mole on my face. I don't notice it and it doesn't impact me, but given the free choice I'd happily lop that thing off.
Eh, you don't really notice it. But when you take the time to look at it again, since it's always mentioned in design forums. You realize, wow, this is pretty stupid.
It's obvious why the decision was made (I mean, there's a speaker, and like 4 cameras right there). But, better integration could've been key.
I expect better from Apple's designers, but it seems like they have been slowly drifting off course.
Gentlemens! This is a decent volume slider.
