Hey folks- we’ve talked a lot about Studio and DSM of late, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t chat about the major updates coming to the core InVision platform as well. We lovingly refer to it as v7 here internally… and now externally I guess. With transparency in mind, wanted to share details on what you can expect in the new year...

    • Introducing Spaces: For all of you requesting better organizational patterns and hierarchy of projects (read here as: “FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THIS WORLD, PLEASE GIVE ME FOLDERS!!!”), I’m happy to tell you we’re introducing ‘Spaces’. Spaces make it possible to organize all of your project-related documents into one thematic group. This includes prototypes, boards, freehands, as well as documents from other critical tools your organization relies on. Yay.

    • Much Faster: This newest version is built from the ground up to be highly responsive and reliable at scale. We’ve stripped down and rebuilt much of the core architecture here to optimize for performance across all existing tech pieces; not only to prepare for the arrival of Studio and DSM, but to optimize daily experience and general speediness across the platform.

    • Powerful Enhanced Sharing Options: We’re dramatically improving sharing with the flexibility to distinguish roles and customize access across your projects. This means better sharing controls, permissions and overall options for all of your documents.

    • New Unified Design: V7 introduces a new universal design language to deliver consistent user experience across the platform. We’ve tightened up the look and feel across many of our key value props (prototypes, boards, inspect, etc), reducing complexity to provide a cohesive, familiar experience across the entire platform.

V7 constitutes a large amount of ‘behind the scenes’ work that’s been going on for quite some time. Excited to embark on 2018 with you all! As always, hit me up with any questions or request you might have. Wishing you all the happiest of holidays!

So if we use a space for a project, we'll be able to use different prototype "types" then? For example, utilizing both mobile phone wrappers and desktop wrappers within the same project.

Correct- so think of Spaces as a higher level of hierarchy that you can organize many different types of prototypes into as well as additional content types (freehands, boards, and supported integrated formats from other apps)

Please let "Powerful Enhanced Sharing Options" include inspect for public share links!

+1, otherwise no way to compete with Zeplin.

They used to have inspect mode for public share and now they don't. This is the main reason, I'm trying different tools other than Invision.

Way to go Invision, making competitor tools more attractive.

This looks good, but given InVision's track record, I'll believe it when I see it. Let's wait until this and Studio launch and we see just how buggy and awkward they are.

I think skepticism is a healthy trait. Cynicism, however, doesn't really help push the conversation forward in a positive trend.

Pessimism is not inherently cynicism. Also as much as I want this to be a positive community (as any should be), there is a degree to which the design world has gotten a bit over-sensitive in this regard.

Is it really so bad if someone is grumpy and kvetches every now and then? Is it so bad if due to past experiences they have poor expectations for something in the future?

    Looks great!

But don't become the Microsoft (this weird company, which announced surface tables and zunes back then) of design tools by just announcing great stuff and never delivering. Time is running, guys. I'm seeing the danger of not being relevant anymore when it's out. Figma did the same for other tools: It came out of nothing and does the same stuff as others planned, but much better.

But yeh, I'm frustrated because I don't have access ;) Sorry for that.

Excited about the "Much Faster" aspect!

So, basically, InVision will try to get in 2018 what Figma has already. Anyway, tools competition is always a win-win for users, so it's good news.

Stephen, were there any discussions into using trained ML data sets? Pixelmator has some layer naming conventions but I can see this has a big future outside of photo manipulation.

Hey Ryan- I think I may need a little more info on what your asking here (apologies if I'm being thick here). What are you specifically looking for? Feel free to ping me by email as well if thats easier to converse over (or we can jump on a call): stephen[at]invisionapp.com :)

Very much looking forward to speed improvements. The rest is a bit meh for our use case, but is this delivers on performance it will a very welcome update.

I've recently switched to Marvel because it's much faster than InVision.

Although I have to admit, a few people ponited out commenting on screens is much easier in InVision and think they are right.

I might switch back if the speed is improved a lot.

Is 'Spaces' still on tract to be released in 2018? Any farm date yet? Didn't receive the beta version as well.

Has any of this happened yet? InVision are the masters of announcing things way too far out... And then sometimes not even shipping the features!

Request early access is the most useless feature on the web. Does anyone ACTUALLY get early access.

    0 points
    • Stephen Olmstead, over 5 years ago

Hey Marcus - we use early access to tier roll-out releases of this when testing before full market general release. So filling out of this form allows us to create a catalogue of those looking to try this out before it hits primetime. Given how large of a backend infrastructure change this is for us, early soak testing is critical for us in Q1 and will be happening (there is a limited bucket for this based on deployment wave needs). There is absolutely no need to sign up for early access however if you want to wait until GA when this will hit for all customers thats entirely a valid option.

We wanted to give folks an option to be involved on the frontside of things if desire, but absolutely an optional action. Cheers!

So Studio, DSM and Invision will be 3 completely separate solutions ? Thanks.

    0 points
    • Stephen Olmstead, over 5 years ago

Not separate, though there are aspects that could be used separately if you so choose. InVision platform is a 'collaborative environment' that can contain the three you mentioned above.

DSM has a visual space within InVision (but also consists of a Sketch plugin and native Studio built functionality which you could use separately OR leverage into the fuller ecosystem).

Studio can be used entirely separately but again will gain from being used with the core platform for sharing/collaboration aspects.

Our core business all connects back to the central InVision platform, but we understand that some individuals may want to pick and choose the key pieces that are most valuable for them (ex: Craft can be used without commitment to core platform minus the syncing aspects, Studio can be used a standalone design tool minus collaborative/sharing aspects). The goal being to simultaneously give you appropriate modularity for your workflow while building a platform that works even better when you combine those value props if you so desire. We don't want folks to feel constrained with stuff they won't use, and at the same time we want those collective pieces to work in concert to provide a more cohesive, powerful whole.

Does that make sense? Always open to feedback here! :)

        Thanks Stephen to clarify this.

So each product will be released separately ? DSM still planned for December, right ?

        0 points
        • Stephen Olmstead, over 5 years ago

Yep- release timeline for each is separate even though they're working on concert. DSM still planned for December (we already have a number teams on beta using this with official deploy happening soon).
