    If Affinity incorporated all those features it would come very close, and even surpass native Illustrator features in many aspects. But I'll drop my crusty old cs6 when it also has things like true vector brushes, vector patterns, isolation mode, and other small things that right now make working in affinity limiting. As to Figma and Sketch- I don't ever see myself doing so advanced vector editing in those apps. To me they fill a whole other function.

    I've been using SubScribe for years, and it is hands-down the best Illustrator plugin I've ever used. I basically can't use Illustrator without it and it's the main reason why I haven't switched to something cheaper like Affinity. I agree with Kemie, in that I don't use Figma or Sketch for heavy vector illustration, so I'm not sure of the benefit there.

    Not really. This stuff is great for creating content but not UI. Illustrator by name is that, to create illustrations ( though it can do more, but these just are half baked features added on top ).

      Thank you Doug. Out of interest, do you think another app can - or should - attempt to compete with Ai as an illustration tool? Or are you purely working in UI/UX?

      I picked on a few recently emerged and popular vector-based solutions for the headline. But CorelDraw, XARA, etc. all retain avid followings and can be considered too.

      Then there’s always the possibility of Autodesk making something magical with this tech.

      Naturally, I am punting the availability of the tech. However, I am very aware that Illustrator remains the king of vector apps due to its immense power, flexibility and user base. We currently make a living off Ai, so are not trying to destroy it. One aspect to my question is whether this tech in other areas could also have a negative affect for our current business.

        Affinity Designer is a direct competition to illustrator in my opinion. I have completely removed Adobe from my work as it tends to less reliable lately then in good ol' days.

        Competition is always good. The bar is set high with the tools that are out there. Typically I'd say use what feels good for you. Don't concern about who uses what. As long the final image can be exported cleanly a tool is that, a tool.

    Makes sense for Affinity. I think Sketch and Figma are definitely the wrong tools to tackle illustration.

    At this point, my reason for continuing to use Illustrator is that it still is the only vector app I know of that has a chart tool. I work in financial services and need to be able to create charts that can stay grouped and easy to update quarter to quarter. Now, if Adobe does what they say, we may have an updated chart tool [not improved in over 20 years] that may either continue to live in Illustrator or be a separate app.
