Sketch bug keeps causing my keyboard shortcuts to stop working!

over 5 years ago from , Digital Designer at Thin Martian

Is anyone else getting this problem in the latest version of sketch?

Basically, some of my keys just stop working after a while with certain docs, and I have to close them and re-open for them to come back.

At first, it was just holding alt to see the distance between objects wasn't working but now my arrow keys have ceased working for moving stuff, and backspace/delete. As I said I have to close and re-open the doc for it to fix it, but even then it only works for a short time.

Is anyone else seeing this problem? Any idea of the cause/fix?

thanks

Sketch blames the Craft plugin for this, so I've been back and forth with them. Last I heard from Invision:

...I believe that this is an issue that we have recently become aware of and that has been reported to our engineering team. They are currently investigating this and when we have an update from them we will be sure to share it with you here.

Goes away when you remove craft

Talked to them on Twitter, they said 46.2 was going to solve the issue. It didn’t. I’m pissed AF because every 15mins I have to reopen Sketch and all my files. Annoying.

Wish I could go back to 45.

Wow that's a big team. Just curious, how do you guys collaborate with each other? Do you use just standard file sharing like Dropbox or something more akin to versioning like Abstract?

I guess "team" here is a misnomer. There's a team of 15-20 UX designers, but each has their own projects – usually 2-3 on each project.

Among those project teams, we share files on local servers with version naming conventions. We use local servers because the work cannot be saved on the cloud – very high confidentiality.

For patterns, we have a master pattern templates file that is regularly updated. For the most part, since we're so iterative, we just don't need 'real time' collab tools because the work is shared among each other so often.

It's been totally fine, and tbh, I don't really see much of an improvement with real time file sharing software. Everything we'd share can be uploaded to the server and shared that way in... 20 seconds instead of 4 seconds. It's just not that big of a change to be worth it.

Edit: keep in mind – we have an explicit demarcation between UX and design; UX is simply to establish functionality, usability, IA, etc., and is low fidelity.

Once our work gets handed off to design, the very high design standards ensure the end work employs the correct patterns.

If we were product designers – i.e. performing all the UX as well as the design – I'd want us to use real-time asset sharing software.

If Sketch is gonna lose (against Adobe) this is one of the reasons why it could happen. Come ooooon Bohemian!

Adobe is a tough company to beat because they have a ton of resources at their disposal and they can afford to lose sales and get things wrong. Not to mention there are fields they still dominate.

To me it looks like switching to Sketch would mean trading the bugs and problems I know and have found workarounds for, for new ones (not to mention they change with every release to the point where people are afraid to upgrade).

Personally, I don't think Sketch will win. The most likely scenario is something better comes along and just steals the market from both Sketch and Adobe. The second most likely is Adobe gets its shit together (XD is getting better and better and it is available to the huge market of Windows users).

Adobe XD (Experience Design) is a result of Sketch though, that means a small team like Bohemian is shaking a giant like Adobe, there must be some reasons for that.

Oh there definitely is, Sketch does quite a few things right and it had taken 34% of the UI market as of 2015 and Adobe had to respond as Sketch keeps growing with 47% as of 2016. XD had 10% in 2016.

But Sketch also has a lot of problems (they still have no damn colour management, haven't introduced any game changing features, the plugins keep breaking and their software is riddled with bugs), so what I am saying is that Bohemian's shitty software is a good competitor and a threat to Adobe's shitty software, but by no means capable of winning the war.

The minute something better comes along, people will jump ship and be happy to rid themselves of all the bugs. I don't think XD is that to win everyone over either - Adobe is just too slow and while they have interesting ideas and a cool roadmap ahead, it might be too late by the time they introduce them.

Figma seems like it could be promising. I adopted sketch fairly early and dealing with bugs just feels like a part of using sketch, but it's gotten a lot better. Not sure if I'm willing to be an early adopter for Figma...

Yup, my entire team is experiencing this as of the last few updates. Highly annoying and frustrating.

I have the same issue. It happens every time I switch to another window and comeback to Sketch. I don't have the Craft plugin installed but I'm still having the same issue.

FWIW, I submitted a ticket to Sketch a few weeks back for this very issue and they did not blame Craft. I did however have to do a full delete and re-install from a targeted download they gave me. Since reinstalling about a week ago, I have not had the issue, and I use Craft. I did however have to redo all my custom keystrokes and saved color palettes. See support tkt here.

I got told this is a Craft issue so I just disable craft until I need to sync to Invision. Haven't had any issues since.

It is absurd to blame Sketch for something a plugin you installed is causing. That's the nature of plugins—they're at the whim of the competency of the individual contributer. I've also been having a new issue with Craft where it's been continually syncing on my computer and causing my hard drive to fill up.

Literally no one in this thread has questioned or accused InVision of being lax on quality.

Sketch, replace InVision with your own cloud library functionality please. Would gladly pay monthly for it.

I was told that it's a Craft bug.

This is why I am not as excited as many about the abundance of Sketch plugins. Every release there is issues like this and seemingly no QC or control of plugins.
