How to get better at UI / Visual design?

over 4 years ago from , Product Designer at car2go

I started design school 5 years ago, graduated, work as UI/UX/Product Designer and am feeling totally comfortable in this field of work. However, I have one big thing chasing me ever since: my UI skills never leave the comfort zone. I believe I'm able to produce visually decent stuff but I always fail to walk that extra mile for some reason. I keep getting this feedback and it's completely justified but I just can't apply it.

Hence I'm wondering if you guys could give me any advice on how to leave that comfort zone and get better at visual design. Much appreciated. ✌️

I think you have the answer in your question itself. Move out of your comfort zone, try a design challenge to explore different types of design. Dribbble is a great place to start a design challenge. Don't expect a lot of criticism or feedback, in the end the effort you put in will matter.. After all, practice is what makes you perfect.

Create something that you've always shy'd away from. Here's a site that might be of help: https://sharpen.design/

Also, if you were inspired by something try recreating it by learning the process. This will help you think different & lead you into creating something unique yourself.

    Good luck!

P.S : No one is perfect, the learning never ends! :)

Hi, that site is amazing! I was looking for something like that for a long time (Daily UI didn't really do it for me because the briefing was way too open). Thanks for your advice :)
