Updated: You may have noticed that DN is different today.

almost 10 years ago from , Founder at LayerVault

Hello DN,

We rolled out some updates today. I'm going to tell you about some of them.

Story pages, like the one you're on right now, are more readable. We've aimed at roughly 65-75 characters per line without making fonts clown-sized.

Comments now have your job titles, which helps provide a little context for what you're reading. It's a nice addition.

Try visiting DN on your iPhone. Things are more tidy now.

There are a number of other small design changes that I'll let you guys discover on your own. Designer News is a work-in-progress and something we really enjoy working on. There's a long way to go and you're going to see a lot of small iteration while we continue to try to get things right.

Allan + Team

Update: Thanks for all the feedback. We've made some tweaks. If you find issues or have more feedback, put it down below.

While I love iterations and improving on design, I must say, it is much more simple, but very hard to read.

My eyes do not know where to focus on the overall design, the typeface is quite small and even smaller on the 'upvote/downvote/comment' section, and in general not the type thats easy on the eyes (no pun intended).

The type on the detailed view of a post is much easier, bigger and I can read it even if I'm sitting further away from my screen which is great and something that used to exist on DN previous to the change.

I think if you gave all of the elements a bit more breathing room, increased the size of the type along with changing the typeface to one that is easier to read, this new change would look and work beautifully.

Regardless, great job at working towards improvement and I look forward to seeing what new features DN comes out with.

+1 I used to be able to know where to go the SECOND I saw this page even the first time I ever used it I could see where to upvote, how many comments and stuff. Now it just feels harder to navigate. Still love DN doe <3

Have to be totally honest because i love Designer News and check it so frequently every day. This redesign is very disappointing to me, especially consider what Designer News was.

    • My biggest gripe is the typography. It had SUCH strong typography, Helvetica performed amazingly. Helvetica replaced with Gill Sans & Minion. Why the switch? Gill Sans' characters are so unconfident and weak compared to even other geometric fonts that could have been chosen (Futura, Avant Garde, Proxima, Avenir). Why use 3 different fonts when 1 was perfect before?

    • Spacing and margins were amazing, every post had such a great feel and weight to them. Now everything is very compartmentalized and there's a lot of padding issues around icons, dividers, typography.

I love Designer News AND Layervault, I only take this time to write this out of love :) It's really difficult to come to terms with the fact that a designer's new source's brand just got weaker and unsure of its self.

Not to hijack your post, but I went to upvote your comment and I was off-put by the fact that the original, simple, blue arrow has been replaced by the actual word 'upvote.' Whyyy :(

Agreed. Text is way harder to read after the change :( I fiddled a bit with font-size and leading. Copy worked a lot better with 20px/30px, but still - Minion is a bad choice.

Imho - Medium.com does a great job when it comes to readability. Maybe the copy here needs as strong serifs as Tisa Pro has..

EDIT: Droid Serif works great, too

I personally don't like the serif font. It's like CSS is not loaded and Times New Roman is being used by default.

I agree with your comment on type. It doesn't feel fully resolved, or 'designed to be read' on the homepage. It's tricky to scan.

I think it could benefit from more attention to the different groups of information and what they mean to the user, and how the user would use them.

Great stuff as always! For me though the homepage is a bit harder to read now, with the icons being in their new location and then some items not having them it's hard to just run your eye down one column, the indentation throws me off. Still awesome stuff :)

I may be going against popular opinion here, but I actually really dislike this update and find it much harder to read than before. I can't find a place to focus on. There doesn't appear to be any sort of hierarchy. I also feel like while I'm on the actual site that I'm looking at a mobile site. Especially now, in this story post. Is there a reason that the entire website seems to be at similar proportions to a mobile device? The overall typographic treatment just seems a bit large and horsey to me now, were as before everything seemed to be delicate and in it's place before. It all just seems like sort of a mess, if I may be blunt. To be perfectly honest, I thought it was a joke at first.

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate you guys taking the time out to update things, especially making the site more mobile friendly, however I thought the original design was great and I don't see any need to have completely redesigned all of the typographic and iconographic elements (even the layout is different!) Nine times out of ten I am all for change, updates, and 'facelifts' to brands and websites, but this is just far too large of a departure for me. DN no longer feels like a strong and powerful source for designers and developers alike. Now it just feels juvenile and unsure of itself.

One last bit: Serif typefaces ? better legibility. That rule really only applies when the point size is very small, but you've chosen to make the smallest type size on the site sans serif.

Edit: For those who are interested, below I've posted a before and after of the DN website. Feel free to compare.

I probably should have added my comment here ;)

So, I just opened up the designer news page and was like WOOAAHHHH. Everything has changed. I am totally all for iteration, but I think this one may have taken a step back. Here is some feedback.

    1. It's actually harder to read now, with the font change. Gill sans is a tough one at small sizes, I think.

    2. With the images now included in the container (instead of laying outside of it), my eye now has to jump from right to left as I scan down the page. It was really nice to have the ability to just follow the icons on the left, then scan right when I wanted to see what the content actually was.

    3. Also, this may have been there before, but there is a lot of text under each headline. I think the headlines might benefit from a bit more white space, or the removal of some of the secondary text.

Just thoughts from another designer. This is an awesome service, and I appreciate all the awesome work that has gone into it.

    Thanks!

    With all due respect:

I'm finding the text on this versión harder to read, the thread view is too narrow and the replies look very confusing.

I appreciate the purpose of the changes, but I think this version is not as good as the previous. The typography, for instance, despite of being a sans was really polished and detailed.

The icons in the front page make headlines hard to skim. My eyes wander all around the screen.

It does look better on my phone (which, btw, is not an iPhone, but a Nexus 4). Thanks for that.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I'm taking it all in. Some improvements have already been made, others will come over the next day or two. The goal wasn't to flex some design muscles. As stated in the original post, you're going to see a lot of small iteration while we try to get things right.

Great work Allan. I especially appreciate that you now have a mobile view. I relatively easy thing to implement would be touch icons for bookmarking the site on iOS. I would definitely save it to my iphone with that addition.

Ah what a great gift for a Friday.

I left Thursday feeling slightly sad about the typefaces and even more so when I saw all the comments along the same lines.

This though, is much better. Indentation fixed, typefaces much improved - back to the cleaner style whilst feeling more modern.

My only criticism is the way in which replies to comments become continually more intended and therefore narrower as the conversation develops. After 2 comments the space becomes too condensed.

But way to go to ask for feedback, and make changes. You guys rock - it can't be easy to design for designers.

    Much love.

90% or more users are designers here. Therefore, most of them has larger screens for design purposes. I mean most people has resolution of 1080p or around. So this section seems very

My first impression concerns are the posts not being aligned on the homepage due to icon / no icon and not having the arrows to up vote. It does look great on the iPhone but I believe so many of us use it on the browser at work.

Really like the Minion type used here but I don't really like the use of Gill sans on the stories page. The weight where the Gill sans is thinner make it harder to scan; it's not as easy as the previous version. Beside that, the combination of subtle color (except the link) and Gill sans in small size make it even harder to read. Personally I prefer the old version where it's really dead simple.

Looks good, although I'm not sure about the Minion font, it is making the text look very busy. You could go back to the Avenir/Helvetica but keep the new serif text, as a suggestion.

I definitely am happy to see DN looking a bit better for iphones. Great job!

One quick concern: viewed links do not change color anymore and look just the same as unopened links. I relied on this feature in the previous version — it made it a lot easier to skim thru site and return throughout the day without accidentally opening the same content over and over again.

That was a massive change, I even miss the Gill Sans change and straight into whitney.

Readability has dropped significantly for me as I always prefer larger text and wider columns to fill the screen on desktop. It forces me to scroll down way too much now especially on active stories. Not too keen on the threaded comment too. Feels a little claustrophobic with the narrower column.

What's interesting for me is the font choice is not great when I was reading it on my desktop machine, but when I fire up DN on my phone, it was such a delight! I really enjoyed it on my phone. Looks sexy on mobile.

I think this could be down to reading distance, typography, and whitespace balance. Everything else, is as sweet as ever.

Thanks guys for making the effort, and able to take it to the chin with some of the comments and turn in around quickly. Still think you guys did an amazing job creating a space for designers. Double THUMBS UP!

Only bug i spotted is maybe this. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9898885/Screen%20Shot%202013-10-11%20at%2010.20.18.png

I think the index is a big improvement. Not sure yet on the header, and i really don't love the comments (sorry!), but the index I love. The roman Gill Sans looks so good. And I am in the minority in that I think the badge placement is way nicer than the half-overlapping treatment from before, even if it does place perhaps importance on some stories over others (it did already anyway).

The new story page is awesome. I love the black buttons. And thank youuuuuu for "Upvote" instead of ""

Also: Yikes, I can't even imagine designing something that only designers use. :)

    1) I like the new font families. 2) I find the light gray text has not enough contrast, and echo some others that it is oftentimes quite tiny. Perhaps this is less of an issue on retina displays, but typical high-res non-retina displays are not as awesome. 3) Is the new graphic of the person and speech bubble the new brand for Designer News? 4) I find it incredible that the homepage/header has no mention of "Designer News" anywhere. It looks more like an RSS reader now. Was that the goal? 5) It looks gorgeous on mobile devices, albeit with no logo, etc. Be very curious on your decision around this.

As always, I'm very much impressed with your attention to detail and craft.

I think it should be noted that the current iteration introduces an awkward punctuational issue—the period used to terminate the last initial and the comma to split the name and title line.

I think the biggest gripe I have with the new design is readability issues, as others have mentioned. But it mainly seems to come from the black article titles. The blue stood out much better and thus making the whole list easily scannable.

I much prefer the new typefaces, but I have to say that I'm not too keen on the new comments structure & story feed structure. When everything was in its own clear white block, it was much easier to scan through.

As everything is now contained in a single white block, it's a little more difficult to scan through and although there are dividers there to help guide the viewers, they aren't as clear. I'm sad to see them go – it was something that I'd drawn a lot of ideas from as it was quite different from the norm, and in my opinion, much better.

Apart from that bugbear, it's a massive improvement. Nice work guys.
