This is great
Easily my favourite so far this year.
Oh god please no.
Interesting, was well received when Nick posted it a month or so back.
I'd put in the effort to navigate this thing because it's interesting, creative and novel. Functionally though? A nightmarish scroll hell.
Holy mother of sons. That's unworkable on PC/Chrome. I have to scroll with two fingers to scroll fast enough to make it go to the next section.
I hope whomever's portfolio this is know of that issue, since there might be people looking at this on Windows.
(No seriously - literally the single worst scrolling site ever on PC.)
Is scrolling on PC ever enjoyable? I mean generally I agree scroll-jacking is bad, but I've seen far worse implementations than this.
Also keyboard navigation works. Again wouldn't be an excuse on most sites, but I can appreciate the experiment.
You don't understand - in my browser & OS combo, I literally have to use two fingers to scroll fast enough.
As in it's bugged.
"Is scrolling on PC ever enjoyable" is a bit of a short-sighted thing to say when someone reports an bug. Do you talk to everyone like this?
Have you tried pressing the spacebar?
I'll be damned!
Relax man, my comment was mostly a joke, although scrolling on PC is shit even in normal circumstances (not spiraling away into infinity).
I think there is room for experimental websites that try something new like this. Particularly when there is great keyboard fallback using either your arrow keys or spacebar.
If you really care about the scrolling on PC that much, Tweet the developer and tell him.
Hehe, point was more that they might care about it. It's not my website!
For the record; I've really not seen worse implementations. That's how bad it is on PC.
Anyway, fair points!
It's clever, and trying new things so fair play to the guy, but I found it incredibly frustrating and it really didn't make we want to explore it. Ended up closing it before I even reached any work.
I'm with you on this one- for the type of work that Nick likes to do, its dead on. I also just appreciate it for being different than 99% of the other portfolios out there.
Simon this was one of favorites as well.
This site crashed my computer. (My i7, 32GB RAM, with a 1080).
0/10, see me after class.
I think this portfolio was really well done.
You must have better eyes than me, that copy is so tiny with little contrast.
And if you try to bump up the text to a more readable size, you find that they went out of their way to prevent you from doing what you want:
Good god, that is terrible.
That is so obnoxious.
"You're looking at my site wrong!!"
Took 5 minutes to load, using internet from a local coffee shop.
Bethany Heck remains my gold standard
Would it be appropriate to ask what people think a good portfolio is? This might help this discussion get to the desired outcome.
Design has changed so much in the last three years.
What type of designer are you looking for?
I don't keep a list of favorites, but standout portfolios all share something in common for me: effective balance of technical showmanship and accessibility.
Plenty of portfolios make an impression without imparting useful information, deliver information artlessly, or fail to do either. Any time an individual or organization nails both, it strikes deeply.
The best portfolios I've seen are all here :)
Can we just take a minute to appreciate https://hypershoot.com So much better that using pinterest (I am not an affiliate by the way)
That huge green banner if you aren't logged in is quite a turn-off though.
I love the idea of the service, but something about it tells me not to invest the time.
Thats true... but I've still found it better than any alternative the past 6 months. I use it quite a lot. Completely stopped using pinterest for web design now. What do you prefer to use to collate your inspiration/screenshots?
I've pretty much stopped collecting my own inspiration content for design except the rare occasional image sent to Pinterest (and usually only of a design element, not a whole website). I find I more often search for new inspiration when I need it rather than going back into the archives for stuff. The effort put into finding a decent service and maintaining my collection outweighed the benefit I got from it.
Also, been enjoying Focus Lab's redesigned case studies
This one is legit: http://www.guglieri.com/
This guy rocks: www.lucian.es
*shameless self promotion
I am UX Designer so my taste is kind of more into simple but fluid kind of sites and this person stands out with their portfolio- http://jlern.com/
If we are talking about body of work, then Area17.com is by far one of my favorites. Their type pairings are fire.
this one is pretty decent. http://dennyshess.ch/
These "best" questions are impossible to answer. "Best" is subjective.
I highlighted a few great portfolios here: https://uxcellence.com/2016/11/17/craft-a-captivating-portfolio
This one isn't so much as a portfolio but you could take queues from it to implement on a portfolio. Both usable and well-designed in my opinion https://maptia.com/
Favorite company portfolio: https://bakkenbaeck.com/
Favorite freelancer portfolio: http://vincentguillevic.fr/
THIS. This is the best portfolio in the universe (using Adobe Portfolio): www.craigrozynski.com
What kind of design you are looking for?
Nothing in particular, could be anything from branding to illustration to even industrial design.
