I'm building a chat bot widget to gather user info to help inform personas

Hi DN people,

So, I've been in the process of updating user personas and it struck me how costly and time consuming it is to gather quantitive data about our users.

Hiring third parties to do this for you is incredibly expensive and relatively time consuming and once done, the data stagnates quickly.

I was looking at ways to ask users questions directly from our product using a chat interface widget, and although there seems to be a limitless amount of options available, nothing did exactly what we were looking for and all came packaged as part of much larger more complex and expensive products.

So, as a side project we wanted to create something very simple that focused on asking the user questions related to their demographics and behaviour when using a product.

This has taken the form of a widget that you can run on selected pages that asks users questions using natural language. A chat interface feels like a nicer way of handling forms and allows you to inject some personality into the questions. The answers are multiple choice, making it simpler for users to engage rather then inputting text.

We will have a number of scripts that vary in tone which you can edit to suit your products voice - but the aim is to make something plug and play with minimal setup. All data is fed to a dashboard - this allows you to view changes over time and over various pages of your product.

At this stage we are trying to validate whether this is a good idea or useful to anyone. If you'd like to help test the beta version please sign up here.

Any feedback is also hugely appreciated even if it's telling us we suck and that this idea should die in a fire. Thanks!

Sounds like a great idea. Questions that I have is as an user, why would I give away all my information? what do I get in return if I spend time to input my personal information?

Funnily enough we were discussing this point last night.

Using a conversational UI makes it far easier to tell the user why they are being asked questions (improvement of product for user - absolutely not for marketing purposes), and that all info given is completely anonymous. With a good script we should be able to wrap these questions into the flow in a much friendlier manner then using a standard form format.

We are hoping this increases engagement, but we shall test and see!

Thank you so much for your feedback, much appreciated.
