FFFFOUND! is closing in May (ffffound.com)

Sad day. It was a useful source of inspiration (with some NSFW in the middle)
You can't discount the NSFW content. The rawness of the site is part of what made it great.
I agree, the NSFW in the middle of great content made the platform really special
Completely agreed.... what a GGGGOOD time we had.
FFFFUCK
What I'll miss the most will be its logo.
For me it's the screensaver. It's just a continuous scroll of their content. Always interesting stuff to look at before I start working.
Upvote if you think Andrew and MetaLab should consider buying it.
Nah, it's a dead investment.
Used to play a game on FFFFound with my old design team where we would count how many image click throughs it would take until a porn thumbnail would hit the screen. Lowest number won.
We had exactly the same game at my old job !
Same :)
I always feel bad because I forget to check these awesome sites that are not aggressively trying to get your back to their site. But then again... I forget to go back to these sites.
Omg. No :/. All those awesome designs, arts, gifs, photos, etc lost... A way to put the content in a torrent file or on a github would be perfect!
Web2Disk can help whoever takes the intiative to do that. I'll try to get my own backup that way, but I can't be the first seeder with my upload speed, sadly.
I'm downloading it all. Including the information about which user saved which image, in order to replicate the 'you might also like' algorithm, whatever that might have been. 400,000 images and counting.
how long till you think you could share it?
I'm uploading them all to dropbox, which is going to take a while, but I think a torrent is a better idea. Once the site finally closes, I'll do that. It'll contain
An OSX sparsebundle containing the images
A MySQL dump containing all the image metadata, users, and user/image relationships
Some python scripts that do things
hello, i'd like to get in touch with you regarding this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/lmmi02h2ekruhwr/ffffound.torrent?dl=0
Try this torrent.
Downloading now from 3 of 3 seeders. Will continue to seed indefinitely.
Thank you! Downloaded and seeding...but please explain how to open it :) the error when trying to mount says "no such file or directory" Thanks,.
any help with opening the directory? thanks
It's an OSX sparsebundle - which is a kind of disk image, so you'll either need to use a mac, or install something like this : http://www.mediafour.com/software/macdrive/. There's a five day trial, which should be enough to get the files out. I didn't just put the files all in a directory, because there's 2.6 million of them, and Dropbox just completely choked.
With huge respect to Dave, is anyone still seeding the torrent? I'm stuck at around 40% and will happily seed if given the chance.
Hey Dave, I was able to download the full torrent (and Transmission verified it), but now when I open the disk image I get this error: https://cl.ly/2V3p0m0z0t2U. Any ideas?
Is anyone still seeding the torrent? I'm stuck at 68% :( Thank you!
Any alternative with the same spirit and soul than FFFFOUND?
Niice.co does something similar-ish
Thanks Lucas!
How long til someone makes a clone?
Nooo, I would pay to keep it alive or export the ffffindings
How much? I've got a million images so far, and with 18 days to go I think I'll maybe even get the lot.
I may, or may not have a way... DM me on twitter – @tonio713
I tried, but Twitter just gave me Internal Server Errors, so I have up.
Anyway, the scrape of the site is still running, but isn't finding many new images at all as it goes through each of the user's individual ffffindings pages.
So what I have so far is:
1) An OSX sparsebundle containing upwards of two million images, organised by their SHA1 hashes (which is how ffffound created the image filenames, they're SHA1 hashes of the file contents). 2) A MySQL database containing the URLs, titles, descriptions and dates of each of the images. In some cases this data was unavailable because the site gave a 404
for the page - for instance http://ffffound.com/image/933436241fb55c643ed4ae855df947e9c8819220). There are more than 45,000 hashes that fall into this category. 3) A list of all users (I think, there are 12,336 of them) 4) A table the records which images were saved by which user.
All up, this dataset is somewhat larger than 200GB, and I'm rather at a loss as how to share it. A torrent I suppose, but my upload might be a bit slow.
What I don't have is a good understanding of how their 'related images' algorithm worked, and I didn't save that information as I crawled the site. Maybe, now the closing deadline has been pushed back, I'll do that.
initially was looking into possibly porting all of it over but ran into some legal hurdles at Pinterest so we built an import tool that is based of any ffffound username. Good luck on the whole lot!
hey did you manage to archive everything?
Hi , is there a solution for getting the ffffound data in the end ?
Hi guys, i wrote this https://gist.github.com/rusintez/46cb0209d7bc6b64b16233042c85d822 FFFFound Scraper.
Anyone know who made Found? I've never heard about the creators behind it.
Made by tha design studio, Yugo Nakamura, Yosuke Abe and Keita Kitamura. http://tha.jp/
Very sad. This site was punk!
Pretty sad moment. I wonder if the people who own this site and Dribbble might consider snatching it up.
Booo. FFFFOUND was great. I remember discovering it in 2008.
A friend of mine once said, "It's better than a [design] bookstore ...almost."
End of an era.
Hey, at least they're only closing once.
Noooooo!! I just knew this sad news!! FFFFound is a so unique inspiration platform. In my opinion, it's unique, indie, various board.. many of the indie content on that size that hard found from other places . But why? why closed?
Used to peruse this site for all sorts of extremely unique, unexpected inspiration. Downloaded tons of pics from here in the past. Forgot about it for about a year, remembered it today, went through old bookmarks to find favorite links, and saw it closed only days ago. SO CLOSE.
Thankfully this is the first place I've found where people have actually discussed this and done something about it (thank you scrapers!!!!).
Need to confirm but ffffound creators may be slightly extending shutdown date to give this a chance - https://www.designernews.co/stories/83313-ffffound--pinterest-importer
Hi Tonio , did you have a link to the ffffound database ?
ooohh noooooooo! #saveffffound !!! Has anyone managed to scrape the whole thing?
super sad me
Does anybody know why it's shutting down?
Couldn't find the exact reason... (it must be the money!) Here's an interesting read: http://waxy.org/2017/04/closing-communities-ffffound-vs-mlkshk
Sad day indeed. :(
no like.
Darn!!!!!
Not surprising but sad.
Sigh! FFFOUND has been with me for many years.
I wish there was some way of exporting all my ffffounds! or importing them to Pinterest.
do you have an account with ffffound?
Yes, but no way to export as far as I can tell?
dm'd you on twitter
I'd be interested in that as well, is it with Metadata?
Hi Uli!
DM me on twitter if you can–@tonio713, or email me–tonioalucema@gmail.com
Agreed—any insight here on exporting would be greatly appreciated. A serious treasure lost...
DM me on twitter – @tonio713
never thought id see some one admit to being a user
huh? how come?
its usually results in people begging for an invite
aah got it. well, I ran out of invites back in 2007! :)
there's a python script that could do the job (didn't try it yet): https://gist.github.com/ashildebrandt/9ad37ea659a0fbff5a05#file-ash_ffffind-py
Edit: just tried and it works :)
