To code or not to code.

over 5 years ago from , Senior Web Designer

Do you think web designers should also know how to code? When I say code I'm not referring to basic CSS HTML JS knowledge, I mean take a design and make it functional.

The reason I ask is I'm busting out 10h days designing then learning to code at night (when I can). I don't want to be a developer but I also don't want to be under qualified as a web/UI designer.

Give it to me straight.

I often experience pushback on design interactions because they're deemed too difficult (or impossible!) to build. It's been very helpful to have a code background to build out prototype concepts to prove that the suggested designs are possible to implement.

It's useful to understand how development works for whatever platform you're developing for (web, iOS, Android, etc.) as it can help inform your design.
