My First Portfolio: Joe Baker

Finally plucked up the courage to build and share my first portfolio. It's currently at a stage I'm not completely worried about setting live. Been a huge learning curve yet loved every second of it.

As a multidisciplinary designer with a focus on animation, it felt appropriate to show the sort of work I enjoy creating the most.

Any feedback from a design or code point of view is welcome. As an ongoing project i'd like to hear your thoughts to which direction It should be heading. e.g. how should I tackle case studies?

    I stood at the top of the page for a couple of seconds thinking that that fancy illustration and the giant logotype where part of a preloading animation. It wasn't. In my opinion, you should bring the content of the site a bit more to the top, to make sure that everybody scrolls through your portfolio.

    Looks really good! Love the daring but fitting use of motion.

    From a code point of view, there's a lot of divs going on there… I'd definitely try to cut some of the container divs, and switch some of them to more semantic container tags, like header, footer and main.

    Also not sure if I'd still bother providing px-fallbacks for REM-units anymore. And you don't seem to use neither Playfair or Montserrat anywhere, so no need to keep those references either?

    The contact icons have an empty class attr., which we could probably do without.

    I'm also not sure the third person in the body copy works for me here – the design has so much personality, and feels so personal, and the third-person kinda takes me out of it.

    All pretty insignificant – over all I really like it! You've created a great little world in just the single-pager, and I'd love to explore it further in the coming pages.

    I would keep going with the mystical wood, game-like theme.

    Just be careful not to overdo ye olde english – especially in long-form case studies. Do tell the studies as stories, and if you find a way to naturally frame them in the world you've created that would be awesome – but the character you create for yourself on the site shouldn't be too far from the one I'd meet if I came to an in-person business meeting with you.

    (In my opinion "Hail fellow" treads close to overstepping that fine line, which in turn makes "forged" seem strained, even though the rest of the bio reads well. And I love "send a raven".)

    Again, really great world building and design - can't wait to see it evolve!

    Looks great man. In the grid view of all the gifs, I feel like the way you setup the layout makes me feel like each is clickable. Consider maybe making each clickable so I can see it larger in say a modal with a short description. Without any context, they're just pretty animations.

    Personally, I don't think a portfolio should be a piece of art (you can save that for the projects). Think about your target audience and how they would use it.

    At first glance, the giant moving header doesn't tell me anything about you or about how to navigate the website. After scrolling, I see what I needed to see but I'm not a fan of that fade (check how it's rendered on multiple browsers, os and displays).

    As everybody said, I would try to merge the first 2 "screens". I would also like to see case studies or projects, not just dribbble shots.

    Nice work! The project grid works fine, but I would like to have a title or some text indicating what the projects are about to help me decide which one I should look at first.

    The animation is really lovely and unique. I disagree that the portfolio "shouldn't" be a work of art -- it absolutely should, especially if you specialize in animation. If you're a UX designer, of course, usability should be the star. And so on.

    In addition to all the great points made above, I'd just like to reiterate bringing the content up slightly so that we know to scroll. Also, the alignment of the centered Projects section compared to the section above is off. And I really REALLY want to click those shots and learn more. So give us more, baby! But great start, I'm going to keep an eye out as you continue to build this out!

    I was a big fan of the new Orbital website and the use of motion here is similarly nice. The only issue I have and this is a subjective thing is I would switch to first person.

    "A true multidisciplinary designer" strikes the wrong tone for me. personally.

    I'd learn towards "I'm a multidisciplinary designer…"

    It's a question of taste I think.

    The contrast of the text is much too low. On phones it's hard to read. The vertical spacing of headings and body copy is off.

    Thank you everyone for the words so far. You can always trust DN to provide fair and helpful critique.

    Most points raised will be addressed. I'm glad I showed it at this stage rather than at a more polished stage so I can further refine it.

    It's great to see most onboard with the story/game feel. That truly is the best representation of my personality/style but agree parts can be toned down. Especially the copy. I was very conscious whist writing it and will be sure to switch to the first person.

    I agree the UX needs improvement. Especially Alex's point, it was designed to look clickable, I just haven't decided how best to move forward with it. My goal is to learn some javascript that might help give the user some control in how they "explore" it.

    It's current objective is to say "Hey, this is me." and not much else. In the future it will be more geared towards the visitor.
