Cocaine is a hell of a drug
This is an experiment – I think this is exactly the sort of thing we need in media today. Visually, it's absolutely crazy, yes, but it's very intriguing and I don't think the usability is inherently bad – at least from what I've briefly looked at so far. Personally I can't wait to see where this goes from here.
Meh. Agree to disagree. I looked at it for 5 seconds and couldn't figure out what it was so I noped out. Looks like I wasn't alone, given the comments here.
Ditto. The about section says it best:
IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE, IT’S FOR YOU.
It's a bold experiment, I'm eager to see how it goes.
Color contrast is totally inaccessible, for one thing
too much, too fast. It feels like he has dumped his brain into this website, and didn't have any filters. This looks/feels like ADD. I already felt like the old Bloomberg site, which he ran, was close to it. I'm guessing now he had people to stop him from going too far there.
Anyway it's a beautiful piece of art. But not great for information.
I have no idea what it is... I get that it's 'a publication'... But - other than reading that small snippet amongst the mountains of text, I just have no idea what I'm looking at. It looks like the fevered dream of a mad man
I think it really looks interesting but while scrolling through I didn't get what they try to tell me. What is this about?
I find it interesting that they actually want people to feel lost and bring a sense of adventure to exploring the website. This is definitely an interesting take. I hope it actually turns out okay for them.
Yeah we tried this in the Flash era..... it didn't work out.
This just screams "MILLENNIALS! LOOK AT US!"
No, that is a very condescending statement. I am a millennial and it doesn't to anything for me, besides looking good. Stop making this about generations.
LOL I am a millennial, too, and you missed my point. I meant that whoever created the site was trying SO hard to appeal to millennials that it's just cringeworthy.
It is nuts and nonsensical. If the time was taken to explain what we were looking at then I would be more inclined to try and fathom how to interact with it, but as it stands I just keep finding myself confused and uninterested.
There are not enough of these on the internet though:
This kind of reminds me of what David Carson was doing with Raygun magazine in the 90's. I'm not entirely sold on the aesthetics but I admire the motivation behind this project.
It's just nice to see someone doing something a bit different. There are limitless possibilities on the web, why does everything need to be Proxima Nova and Lato?
The next time I'm trying to explain how you can 'try too hard' to be something resembling 'cool', I'll be using this site for my first example.
so, I love the visual design of the site. But I have a hard time actually consuming the content. It's not designed to be consumed, it's feels like it was designed to be looked at. It's not design, its art.
And I have a very hard time understanding what the site is about, even after reading their... missions statement..? :/
information should be direct and accessible, not disorienting and obfuscated. but maybe that's just me?
"A REAL-TIME, HIGHLY EXTENSIBLE, EXTREMELY MODERN WAY OF MAKING THINGS ON THE INTERNET."
Couldn't be any clearer /s
You state that as a fact. But there are plenty of designers, David Carson for example, that would say that layers of obfuscation create a more immersive experience for the viewer.
In terms of this site, I don't think it's supposed to be a news repository that you return to on an hourly basis. It's supposed to be read like a magazine - browse through the different features and stop when you see something that piques your interest.
No, I stated it as an opinion.
I still don't really know what this is
I actually got a launch edm from the outline this morning and instantly unsubscribed because it was totally breathless & indecipherable.
When I found out that it was Josh Topolsky's next, next thing – I gave it a look in. The visual design is intense, but it really works on mobile. I really love the interaction design – especially because this all browser based.
Can't wait to hear more about the system they've designed to support it. I've resubscribed to their mailing list.
I honestly love it. I'm 22.
Kept scrolling just to see if anyone else liked it. Upvoted ;)
Pro-tip: view the site on mobile for best results. Pretty sure they designed this to be mobile-first - things like the cards and icon animations makes way more sense in the portrait layout.
I dig what they're doing here, but I'm also one of those people that spends my time browsing Snapchat Discover content when I'm bored. So these navigation patterns are already familiar to me.
Those squiggly animated lines under the pull quotes need to go though.
Agree, mobile felt faster and more natural with gestures at the forefront.
Art vs. Design
This is nuts. Looks kind of nice but at the same time it's winding me up just looking at it. It's a blunderbuss of information, with long form pieces flowing into snippets gathered from other sites.
It also feeds my irrational hatred of sites that move you to another article as you scroll down.
1+ hate for scrolling into next article... I like index's
Yeah plus I like to know when I've actually hit the bottom of it. There's something really distracting about pages that just load up the next thing before you're even done with what you're reading.
Makes my fans haywire go an jerks every few seconds
(top of the line mbp)
Design isn't just how it looks, a blog that makes a CPU drive at 100% isn't a good experience.
On mobile it reminds me a lot of Snapchat Discover, except without the lowbrow content.
Will be interesting to see how it fares, definitely very different to what the rest of the media industry are doing, not just visually but from a business perspective too.
Too busy!
It's like a SnapChat Story got together with 80's MTV and had a baby.
I dunno, it's fun and experimental. Why not.
I think this is great. Yes it's impractical, disorienting, etc. Perhaps it's hipstery or too designy or whatever but it seems like there are plenty of practical, user-friendly, non-trendy web publications out there and maybe blowing shit up will lead to something interesting. It's worth a shot anyway.
Is this site not 'user-friendly'? I think it really depends on who their target audience is. I personally loved the experience of using it, felt more like a magazine type experience than just a soulless news repository.
I've made 4 clicks and leave.
no clue where to begin
I'm simultaneously impressed and horrified.
The kids are wrong, but they're gonna be alright.
1) Take every section from http://www.trendlist.org/
2) Combine them all
3) Call it theoutline.com
4) Be proud
Beautiful. My ADHD mind is fully satisfied by this layout.
Looks like a bit of mess. It's hard tl see where you are, where the article ends and where a new one begins. Too much for eyes.
