Apple simply don't make gimmicks anyway. The fact is, the touch bar is beautiful to use. Very quick, incredibly lovely to actually touch. But also, 3rd party developers are going to do cool things with it. People who says it's a gimmick probably still just have the previous or older machine and can't think open mindedly about the possibilities. Contextual actions are great. If the Touch bar is a gimmick, then so are contextual buttons on all interfaces. This just so happens to place them at your finger tips for super quick and easy access while working.

As an owner of one of these machines, the Touch Bar is fairly gimmicky. There are a couple of use cases that are nice. Brightness and sound adjusting being tied to a slider for instance. For the most part, it's cumbersome and time-consuming to use. I'm almost entirely a keyboard user and do not take my eyes off the screen. Even with the proximity of the Touch Bar to the screen, shifting my gaze downward requires more effort than I thought. The esc key not being hardware sucks, it's also slightly off in its placement so it requires me looking at the touch bar making sure I'm actually tapping it as there is no response mechanism. I'm open for the potential to be surprised, but at the moment its a gimmick.

I don't have one, but my roommate got one (and he's not a designer). I see the Touch Bar becoming a get additional tool once more applications integrate. Like, open up Sketch and then you can quickly hit the "Rotate" tool or something. It's quicker than sliding your mouse from the object you selected to the Rotate icon. And it can be a little simpler than your keyboard shortcut.
