What's your preferred external display setup?

I'm in the market for a new external display (or displays), and I'm realizing that making a decision isn't as simple as it used to be. A few years ago, the only choice I'd have considered would be a single 27" Thunderbolt display; but now, it seems very realistic to go with either one 27" 5K LG display, or two 21.5" 4K LG displays. Unfortunately, I don't really have a way to experiment with the two setups before making the decision.

What's your preference for external displays for the kind of work you do?

  Seconded. Great colors, 4k's amazing, and its aesthetics are fine…not gorgeous, but not an eyesore. Definitely worth the money.

I have the LG ud88 (4k) because I am going to upgrade to the new mbp soon. But I am using it with the late 2013 mbp and its been great...
The color is fantastic, great monitor. And using usb-c means I can plug hard drives into my monitor instead of buying a dongle.

I would go with the Dell Ultra Sharp series, they are impressive displays.

UI Designer here. I currently have an ASUS PB278Q 27" and it's been ok. The color is a little off from the thunderbolt displays so I've been holding out to buy the new LG 5K. The reviews on that one have been great so far.

I don't currently use any additional, external display, but if I would choose to do so in the future, this one is definitely on my list: EIZO FlexScan EV2730Q › eizo.de/flexscan/ev2730q-bk/ (*26.5 SQUARE!)

  I haven't tried it so I'm just speculating, but a square monitor sounds like a pretty bad idea - instead of moving your head left and right, you have to move it up or down, or move your eyes and see it at a less than optimal angle.
  Also, a lot of content is either thin and tall (websites, documents) or wide (movies).
  Are there any advantages to it I'm missing?

    I haven't tried it yet, either, but as I am mainly working in branding / brand/logo/corporate design (and symbols/icons), a square ratio does not sound that bad at all.
