What tool do people use to track their time?

over 6 years ago from , Designer

The studio I work at is currently evaluating new time tracking tools.

I'd be interested to hear what tools other designers use for this, and what they think the pros and cons are.

Currently we use Workflow Max, but are finding that the UI is cumbersome, which causes people to cut corners in terms of the detail of their tracking and causes problems.

I've used a ton of time-tracking tools and the one I like the most is Toggl.

The main reason? Task-based tracking. As a freelancer, my clients typically don't care about when I worked on something, just how many total hours it took. With Toggl, I can start and stop a task multiple times over multiple days and each time, Toggl will update so that I don't have to keep reentering a task for each date, or worse, taking a single task and entering the hours on multiple days in a weekly timesheet grid view.

It also has good team functionality, which I've used when I've brought in a subcontractor on a project too.

(Incidentally, I would actually prefer a pure task-based system that would accrue time for a single task over multiple days, like I used to have with a tweaked version of TaskFreak, but Toggl also has idle detection and better exports and team functionality, so I switched)

Another vote for Toggl. I like their report functionality to see how many hours I've worked on a particular task/client project. I like the flexibility of inputting via a timer or manually. And for free!

+1 for Toggl. Have been using it for a few years now and it's great for time/task tracking, and it's free.

I've used Harvest for two years and no complaints here! It does time tracking but also a bit more: invoicing, project/time based reports, etc.

I'm a big fan of Timely App

Simple calendar view, with coloured blocks for each client/project. They also released an update a couple months back that lets you integrate with apps like RescueTime to auto track chunks of time, super useful!

If someone using Freshbooks for time-tracking reads this, I hope they wouldn't mind sharing about their experience?

we have been using mite. (http://mite.yo.lk) and love it. It's simple, cheap, easy to understand. Plus the customer support ist amazing. They are a team of two based in Germany, i usually get a response in about 20 mins.
