Which one: PaintCode, Principle or Framer?

over 6 years ago from , Designer

I am curious about which app do you use for your UI animations.

Especially, PaintCode generates codes for Swift 3, Android and JavaScript. Framer is quite good with it's code panel. Although you can make a one-time purchase for Principle, you need to pay monthly as pro or individual licenses for FramerJs.

I think that Principle and Framer have different purposes.

-Principle is kind of quick and dirty, very useful for micro interactions that you can hack together extremely quickly. The software has almost no learning curve for someone who knows Sketch and a bit of After Effect. I use it for interaction/animation, the same way I would use pen & paper for UI.

-Framer is more mature, help achieve bigger prototypes, more interactions, full app flow, logic etc. It requires some learning and a bit of coding. You can also share a prototype. So the tool help create something more polished that is nice for user/usability testing.

-Origami is a lot like Framer, it depends wether you prefer actual code or building blocks.

I don't know PaintCode but it looks like a drawing software rather than a Prototyping tool.

Principle and Framer are geared toward interaction design and PaintCode seems to be primed around getting UI designs in Sketch into Swift/Obj-C code. Not a 1-to-1 comparison.

That's not correct. I would say that paintcode is very practical drawing application (with features that no other app can compete with, like variables and expressions), not only tool for "getting UI designs in Sketch into Swift/Obj-C code". I used it for almost all graphics I needed in my apps. Whatever you draw in it, you will get an appropriate code (no images). They have also paintocde plugin for Sketch (i didn't use it).

Regardless, my point is that it is not an app primarily for designing motion whereas Principle and Framer are. It's apples to oranges.

Unfortunately this question will always remain unanswered. With the amount of apps available (and constantly increasing), users will always find the best app for them.

Yes, you can ask people which one they use, but I don't think that should make the decision for you. If you already have an app that does the job, why change?

All serves for same purpose but they are not identical with their features. For this reason, i just wanted to learn which app do UI designers like most. This won't change my decision for sure. I thought i may hear something new about any app that i didn't discover yet.

You do not need to pay monthly for Framer.
