Ask DN: Finding Color

Hey fellow designers,

I need your help. I am trying to find a color that can pair well with Facebook, YouTube and Twitter's official colors.

The example: http://imgur.com/a/w0gEa

As you can see from the example, the YouTube red color and the current blue (#008bce) are both very strong. For Twitter and Facebook, the blue might not be a big deal.

What would go well to replace the blue color so I can use this color for Facebook, Twitter and YouTube data? Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Only trouble is that I still can't figure out how to enable the user to input their own hex colour without destroying the layout when viewed on mobile.. Here is my attempt;

      It looks awesome! I am playing with it now.. I noticed pressing the enter button won't change the color automatically until I clicked outside of the input box. Thanks for making a cool color pairing tool!

      @rhys I felt like learning something new so I made your prototype more modular, and based it on a for loop to generate the two halves of the screen. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Why does it have to be separate color at all? If it's core to your app, why paint yourself into a corner by designing it around what other people do?

    Real world example, pretend you also supported instagram as of a few months ago. Their app icon and color was blue all over. Then, overnight, it turned into a strange blue/orange gradient. Would your decision to try to play nice with other companies design decisions that can and do change constantly still work?

      Hell yeah.. agree 100% with you! Changing the color isn't final decision. It's one of the options that we are considering. We accidentally changed the bar color to the source color and the feedback that we got was our users loved it LOL I personally was surprised with the feedback. They said it's easy to identify the source from looking at the bar so we are trying to find a neutral color that works. Anyway the reason I am asking here just to find a better approach from other designers. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

        Granted I don't have the full context, just seems like an endless exercise that could be achieved some other way. But my hesitation is coming from a recent color design mess that I'd enjoy avoiding again.

    Why not white? Curious why you ruled it out, seems like the obvious thing (see DN layout for ex...)

      That blue box is actually a treemap. My team and I thought by having YouTube/Facebook/Twitter color on the top will make easy to identify. We were thinking we could just use the source color for the treemap color but we will face another issue when we have multiple sources in the future.
