Best email design practices?

Anyone have any good reliable resources for email design?

We usually just use some version of mailchimp, but we have decided to go away from that, and so with our new system, their email creation is pretty horrendous so I'm thinking about taking the fun dive into email design / creation.

    Really Good Emails

    A note from a developer, make them simple. For the love of god make them simple. I've spent countless hours trying to develop an email to the "T" of a designers wishes. We accepted the challenge and came inches away cause it was just too over the top.

      I've been looking at those. And yes, I want them to be simple as well. As a designer, what is the best format you like the designs in? Would you like a photoshop doc / image? Broken up layers? Assets generated? Style guide created and attached with it as well?
