Ask DN: Can anyone give me brutal honesty on two pages of this website - home page and blog post pages?

Hello there, brilliant and honest designers of DN! =)

I'm dying to know what your brutally honest opinions are on two pages of a client's website:

Goals: - Increase percent of return visitors - Increase time spent on site - Increase traffic to site / brand awareness

I really appreciate anyone taking the time to critique / offer their advice! It means a lot.

Lauren =)

Hi Lauren. I've seen you all over the internet 8-)

It feels super busy. There is so0o0 much going on on every page, and it's tough to absorb.

Also on the products page, not having items categorized hinders the experience if someone is just looking to browse.

The home page lacks any identity, the ads are overbearing to the point where it's tricky to tell what kind of site you're on.

I also agree with Renee, the content is quite generic and I see little that distinguishes this site from many other web design blogs.

On iOS, the blog page is immediately throwing up an overlay for an ad or social media box or newsletter sign up (can't tell which) which my content blocker is blocking. Instant bail.

To be brutally honest I'd say the content needs improvement. Those kinds of articles - '39 Creative Resume Examples' or '50 Awesome Photoshop Tutorials' - are everywhere on the web and to be honest I don't think the content in them is actually very good or well researched.

    For example: vandelaydesign.com/creative-resume-cv-examples/

I could just do a google image search for 'Creative CVs' and this article wouldn't provide any more value than that google search would.

Quality over quantity - I'd say spend more time writing really good quality and engaging articles, rather than compiling lists of (sometimes quite bad) design examples.

    All the best :)

    Looks like a template.

After poking around for some time, the content itself is pretty decent. Unfortunately, it is presented in such a way that I instantly thought of generic/stock/click-bait.

On the homepage - your categories 'Editors picks, etc' are completely lost in the sea of images. The titles of articles are lost as well, so I didn't click anything because the images were not exciting.

Suggestions.. Look for higher quality images. Maybe combine the text into the images as a nice overlay?

I really like the main navigation – super slick experience with the hover interactions. But, again, the image tiles son't do anything for me. I wouldn't click them because they look like stock garbage.

    1. lacks proper branding (many amazing visual designers on DN that can help with that for that low low $) 2. information architecture issues like the lack of categorization and discovery (users should be able to easily browse or find specific articles with ease). 3. Since the article topics are broad, you need some sort of main navigation for different categories or users with lose engagement extremely fast like I did. 4. The content in the articles seems thrown together and lack depth(seem like marketing articles). Note: Redacted statement, as I read more some of the are articles were actually great.

Looks fine, little generic, little tight on spacing in certain places, and I spotted some images that seemed low quality due to a combination of compression techniques and being clear stock photos.

That's the brutal. It's still a top 10% site, just needs some more identity imo.

Overall it looks very clean, and simplistic. I noticed on the blog post page under "You may also like.." there are about 45 suggestions, keeping it down to about 6 wouldn't be a bad idea.

Looks indeed as a template, but i'm missing the focus on the page. I know it's a blog overview, but you need to tone it down a notch. I'm not digging the weird gradient on the block / image. For the blog detail (not to copy) but look more towards Medium. Newsletter, trending, more inspiration blocks should be below the article. Because you want people read the full article not to skip during reading.
