Bots are not the new apps.

Reading and typing is a very poor substitute for a graphical interface. It has its place and purpose, but no, we’re not going to go back to effectively using DOS inside Messenger for everything.

Think about how some of your apps like a calendar or contacts list used to be designed with the same look as their analog counterparts.

The product designers believed we wouldn’t be able to make the mental leap to storing our contacts on our phone or computer unless it looked like what we were already familiar with.

Contacts uses a master → detail pattern (and isn’t like the paper equivalent).

Calendar apps and paper calendars have a near identical 2D layout presentation problem, so it’s no shock they look similar. They should!

      I agree.

Bots have one upside - they're easy to access, just open up messenger and you're away.

But they have so many downsides, they have bad discoverability, typing takes fucking forever, and at the end of the day, they're just not that smart.

I honestly don't think bots will ever be used for anything that important or serious, and I've made one. I'm not quite sure why big companies are betting so much on their success. For lighthearted social applications, yeah bots could work. But how much value and money can really be made there?

When it comes to good software doing useful things which make companies money, Gui's are here to stay.

And in favour of bots: The command line has been a mainstay for those who know how to wield it for a very, very long time. If “bots” are simply the command line for mainstream use, then that’s awesome. I can see it working well for that.

But pretending it’s more than that feels silly.

Big companies are betting on chatbots because the app market is more than saturated: http://www.recode.net/2016/6/8/11883518/app-boom-over-snapchat-uber

Bots aren't the new apps, but they're going to be useful in some ways. It will depend on the use case

That feels like a strange thing to say at a time when anything that can is becoming software.

Also agree and great example. If we're to learn anything from this bot ordeal it's to think a bit more thoroughly about realistic use cases like this for trends before calling them the "next paradigm".

Conversational interfaces are still interfaces. You still have to design the UX of the bot. Likewise, if you were to develop a skill for Alexa, there's the manner of figuring out memorable, brief phrasing for commands, responses, and queries.

Design isn't a visual medium, it's a concept, so its silly to think that there's no place for design in bots.

It means wait a month or two until everyone gets tired of conversational UI and people want to start creating frankenstein interfaces that blend CUI and GUI.

If you think designers just design apps theres a larger problem here. Lots of professions have been phased out of the course of history, but yet people still continue to do them because they love their craft and doing what they love. Designers will always continue to build things because we love making beautiful and useful things for people. It might not be apps, but there will always be something.

If you don't fall into that boat, that's ok! Find that thing you love to do, everyone has one.

Bots are only the new "app" if you're an SV /SF douchenozzle.

A bot that speaks to me does NOT need to be friendly. I would love if we could have a dialogue where we can both open call each other "asshole" without feelings involved.

Bots just feel like a solution in search of a problem and as Pedro says it's just because of the app market is entirely saturated so you have to differentiate your crummy startup somehow…
