I know I'm being that guy, but this is actually a fantastic product to use.
I agree.
And if people have privacy concerns they should just avoid any internet connected activity.
And if people have privacy concerns they should just avoid any internet connected activity.
Sure, let's lose all privacy on the internet. Got any more of these ideas?
It's Google, they didn't make this keyboard for fun. I'm waiting for someone to capture the traffic and find out what exactly they're doing with full network access besides serving search results.
It's a great product at a price.
What guy? Google makes the most polished and best products on web and mobile, period - If that's what you're referring to.
Saw a comment on TNW that seemed quite relevant... Now Google can use anything you type on your phone for recommended searches, advertising etc..
BIG BROTHER MAAAAAAN!
The team aims covers this concern directly in the release notes.
What Gboard sends to Google: • When you do a search, Gboard sends your query to Google’s web servers so Google can process your query and send you search results. • Gboard also sends anonymous statistics to Google to help us diagnose problems when the app crashes and to let us know which features are used most often.
What Gboard doesn’t send to Google: • Everything else. Gboard will remember words you type to help you with spelling or to predict searches you might be interested in, but this data is stored only on your device. This data is not accessible by Google or by any apps other than Gboard.
That's what they want you to think ;)
Do you work at Google? Do you have any underpinning to this claim of yours?
When you switch on Allow Full Access you get an alert modal stating: "Full access allows the developer of this keyboard to transmit anything you type, including things you have previously typed with this keyboard. This could include sensitive information such as credit card number or street address. Allow? Don't Allow?"
Maybe this is more of a general OS alert, but it also means you just have to take Google at their word.
Just don't press the Gboard button to send off sensitive info. I'm sure if you just send your credit card info using the normal message, Gboard won't know about it. I could be wrong though.
That's why I'm always wary of third-party keyboards (even though they do make our lives easier). It's akin to someone installing a keylogger on your computer.
U.S. only :( Why not for UK as well?
Yeah, why not for the whole world?
Yeah, wtf, just tried to look for it there also. Why not even release it to all english speaking countries.
Canada needs some love too. waits patiently
God damnit. Why.
Create a second icloud account that is US. I downloaded it and switched back to my Canadian account and it works on my phone.
I even believe you can just switch stores, generally. But I subscribe to iTunes Match which doesn't allow me to switch very easily.
What do you mean "UK as well"? Is UK entitled to some Medieval treaty with US about this?
It should be available to the whole world.
It's great but why don't you make it available for all languages?
Google's just killing it with these neat little tools these days. Love it!
any plans for similar on android? this is a much better ux than "google now on tap"
I'm not on the team, so i'm unsure. The PM is talking over on Product Hunt (discussion), she might have answered the question.
great, thanks for the link!
for those too lazy to click, seems like a yes:
Bri Connelly — product @ Google @mauriyouth Working on the best way to bring the same functionality to Android right now!
In all seriousness Nick, what was your role on this? It does look good, I just wish, like others, it was available internationally, I don't see why I shouldn't be?
Hey, I'm not on the Gboard team, but I love the product. The PM talked on ProductHunt about international availability and reasoning.
Wow, this is a big FU to the entire Android ecosystem. Google is saying "we agree with Apple, Android users are second class". You're welcome for my years of support for the platform Google.
This just replaced SwiftKey for me. Loving it so far.
Only in English for now, also not available in Romanian AppStore.
seems promising
