Not intending this to be snarky, but did gradients ever leave? I think they only disappeared for that one year when everyone was obsessed with flat design, but for the last 3 years they've been as reasonably popular as one would expect

Personaly, I think gradients leave around a year after the iOS 7 came out. Look on your screen and count how many app icons have flat color backgrounds right now. For me the ultimate designe style is the Stripe style and I glad that Apple propagate gradients once more.

A ton of them do, particularly Apple's default icons. Honestly, I think gradients were one of the most prominent parts of iOS 7's design.

I disagree. Most of the app icons on my phone screen are sporting gradients. iOS 7 pushed gradients pretty heavily, too.

Android apps tend to rely less on gradients, but it's still there.

Most of big brands push flat background icons, Instapaper, Medium, Spotify, 53 Paper, Messenger ( bubble has gradient ok ), Periscope. 1/3 Apple apps also have no gradients and white bg. But guys I think is subjective for everyone :)
