Dropbox: Project Infinite (blogs.dropbox.com)

Holy shit.
Now all I need is a time machine.
Hmmmm.
also now! https://www.odrive.com/
This is something I've wanted for a while, but will someone at Google Drive or Dropbox PLEASE build in some sort of .ignore
functionality? I like having my code backed up to the cloud (GDrive/Dropbox + GitHub + local = triple redundancy), but I hate that I'm storing node_modules
and build
.
I couldn't agree more. There was a project a while ago called dbignore, which as you would imagine, allowed you to create .dbignore files similar to a .gitignore file.
Last I checked though, it doesn't work with the current Dropbox version.
Although, more directly speaking to your point, why not just use Bitbucket as a redundant remote git repo? You can have an unlimited number of private repos as long as you're the only person accessing them (up to 5 people for free).
Or why don't you just use Gitlab.com? Instead of wasting large amounts of space syncing to Google Drive or DropBox. They have unlimited free private repos and you can just host it on Gitlab, which is similar to Github.
What are the benefits of Gitlab over Bitbucket?
Main benefit is that Gitlab offers unlimited free private repos compared to bitbucket which offers only 5 for free.
Bitbucket offers unlimited public and private repos, it's just the number of users is limited to 5. I'm up to 7 repos so far and haven't paid a dime...
Ahhh sorry, I misunderstood. Bitbucket sounds great then.
I already pay for GApps so pricing isn't the issue.
I've thought about that, but the benefit of using GDrive/Dropbox is that it's zero-configuration and completely thoughtless (i.e., happens in the background with no additional effort). I was looking into setting up multiple remotes for some of my repos but haven't had time to look fully in to it.
I mean, git mirrors your local filesystem with the exception of files ignored by .gitignore.
I can understand the difficulty in remembering to push to two separate repos, but I'm sure after doing it for a few weeks you'd fall into the habit.
git push origin master && git push bucket master
One of the reasons I stopped using Dropbox as much as I used to (and stopped paying for it) — the 256GB drive on my MBP gets full quickly. Being able to store everything in the cloud and just grab it as needed might sway me back to paying for Dropbox.
Edit: Providing they allow it for personal accounts.
Surely 'pro' accounts too ;)
I only upgraded mine to get more space, that's it... However, this new feature is awesome and agreed they should roll it out to everyone, but I could see it being a 'paid' account feature.
Sorry, yes… I effectively meant all accounts :)
To be fair they have had selective syncing for some time, but it does have the limitation of needing to use the browser to see all your files.
What did you switch to instead?
I was using Dropbox as my "Documents" folder, so I'd get backups and version history for everything for "free". Until something went wrong and it overwrote a lot of my work with old versions.
I never really used the syncing part of Dropbox, so it didn't make sense to keep paying for it. These days I just make sure I have a good backup solution (Time Machine plus Backblaze).
My only question is how this works with documents with linked files. If I have an .ai or indesign file with linked images and I try and open them via the cloud storage will all my links be broken?
Adobe has needed to use relative vs absolute paths for linked files for a long time, but if you add them to Creative Cloud libraries it shouldn't be an issue.
Can't wait. It's essentially how we all use Dropbox on mobile, but now universal. Can't wait.
Now i just need google drive to follow suit. I have to use google apps so i have my custom domain email, and so I am already paying $10/month for unlimited storage with drive... please google, i beg you
OneDrive on Windows has this for years.
As much as it sounds like a game changer this is only a better/faster interface for selective sync. Not sure why they waited so long.
Very similar (read: identical) to BitTorrent Sync's 'selective sync' functionality. Super handy feature.

Yeah. This seems like a game changer.
This is exciting!
I didn't know I wanted this feature until it was just presented to me. How awesome!
