Ask DN: Why hide Medium posts on Designer News?

over 7 years ago from , Product designer based in Amsterdam with experience in User Research, Interaction Design, and Design Systems.

I've seen some extensions to hide Medium posts on Designer News but I'm not sure why. I've found great articles on Medium every now and then.

9 times out of 10 medium articles are horrendous (an example of an actual good article on medium: https://m.signalvnoise.com/reconsider-41adf356857f#.p23q4anuj)

Most medium articles are like "Why I quit PhotoShop for Sketch when I became a Buddhist" or "You're making wireframes wrong, here's the way we do it at Facebook" or "The best UI is no UI, or 'how I became a designer as an anthropologist'".

The anti-intellectualism is off the fucking charts on medium.

Exactly. Sooo tired of the design nonsense on Medium right now. Similarly, what's going on with the barrage of "Daily UI" shots on Dribbble lately? I feel like the more I see of these types of things on Medium and Dribbble, the more I withdraw from those communities. Maybe they're not meant for me... I don't know.

You missed out "I don't use Photoshop/Sketch because I'm a UX designer and this is a badge of honour for some reason"

Medium itself deserves some credit though, for creating such a good reading experience that many people become oblivious to the fact that most of the actual content is crap.

Whenever someone wants to write a masturbatory article about how Apple is killing design, or declare that flat design is or isn't the solution to every problem, or that all designers should or shouldn't code, the outlet of choice is Medium. There's some great writing on Medium, but because the barrier to entry is nonexistent, there's more noise than signal.

Unfortunately, with the open sign up system (vs. the original closed invite), Medium has quickly become long-form Twitter.

I made the Hide Medium extension because this dude asked for that feature in this thread. I hadn't made a Chrome extension before, and I was just starting to learn JS and it looked like an easy first project to tackle.

Because Medium is the TEDx of blogging websites.

Keep in mind that upvoting good posts helps immensely—probably more than writing posts shitting on the "bad" posts.

Read one you've read them all. Also the format of Medium encourages incredibly poor writing.

"Also the format of Medium encourages incredibly poor writing."

I'm curious. How does Medium's format encourage poor writing? What changes would required curb it?

a little side track talk, but i just have to let it out: i thought eventually the medium logo will grow on me, as most of disliked rebrand did, in a way or another, but no medium logo still looks so weird to me

I guess because it has become spam. It is almost always clickbait, self-promotion or promotion of a certain product, or a simple opinion, that could have been expressed in a paragraph, blown up to an essay that mostly repeats itself and paraphrases the same sentence over and over again.

This is what happens, if you remove all obstacles to everything - you are not required to learn the tools anymore, because everything is streamlined and dumbed down. Same goes for design.

I had no idea, there where extensions to hide medium posts. Can someone post an example please?
