Ask DN: Music 'with' everyone (in real time) - A better spotify?

over 7 years ago from , emotional designer

Hey guys, Not sure if this would be an "ask DN" or "show DN" but here it goes. I am working on a new app that I would like you to critique. Well, as of now its only on the design phase and I am trying to get more pre-launch user base, so basically right now all, I have is my (subscription site) http://muswe.com (this teaser video about it) https://youtu.be/O_YIFDOaUIg (wireframe phase 1) http://muswe.com/wireframepone.jpg

Basically, the idea is to bring a better spotify. What I believe is music is an experience that you should share with people (at times) and for that we don't have set patterns. So, this app would be everything like spotify, but with the added advantage of real time listening with others. Its gonna be like that you are listening to a song in real time with a friend of yours no matter the distance.

You and your friend can live in two very different parts of the world, but you can 'add' your friend to a song to create a 'grouped song' and you both (or more) can listen to the song in real time together.

I am really very excited about this idea and working as hard as I can on the design phase and with my friend who is a developer. I would love any feedback/guidance that you guys might have on the idea/wireframe/anything.

Thank you very much.

From the pitch, thsi sounds a lot like the now defunct service Plug.dj. Do note that despite their large userbase, they weren't able to monetize at all and couldn't sustain themselves. The same is true of "free" music websites like Grooveshark and Rdio. Please be careful with this, it may not work out.

Hi, thanks for letting me know about plug.dj. I would make sure to do a thorough research on them and find out more about the owners and try and talk to them. Like I said, the worse that could happen is I would fail and I am okay with it. I am careful on not investing a lot of third party money in this project before we are sure of the service.

It sounds like also defunct Turntable fm. Basically a listening room was set up, and up to 5 djs could set up a playlist for the room to listen to. Here's an article about it http://techcrunch.com/2013/11/22/turntable-fm-shutting-down-so-company-can-focus-on-turntable-live-events-platform/

Yes I was reading about plug.dj and stumbled upon turntable as well. It was kinda amazing to know how successful they went with the idea that I till yesterday considered to be "unique" I would research more on both the companies or even try to get in touch with them via linkedin or anything, and see if I find a turn-around and avoid the mistakes they made.

Because, one thing is for sure. People loved it and would love it again, but with a better business model.

What is the difference between this app and the social features of spotify?

With spotify you can: - Create share playlists with people from all over the world - See in real time what your friends are listening to - View your friends playlist

If your concept is really all about this listening exactly at the same time, I would make that the focus of your app. I would remove all other aspects form your app, which makes it feel like a spotify and other music apps and focus on your core difference.

Hey Jeffrey, thanks for the guidance. Will keep that in mind, since that is a really good idea. And basically, my app would be a lot like plug.fm or turntable (both of which I recently found out about). That being said, I have noted down a few points that I personally feel should have been taken care of at plug.fm from a ux point of view. I am planning to discuss with the founders of plug.fm more on this and learn more on what they have to say about this.

Does Spotify or another service offer an API? You might wanna consider the feasibility of this before you get too far down the road (music licensing isn't really a game small players can play).

Well whats the worst that could happen ? We are gonna fail? I am ready for that. Atleast its gonna teach me things that I could never learn otherwise. Moreover, we are planning to gather atleast a 1000 pre-launch userbase before the end of february so that we might have something to show the investors and music labels while contacting them. And, no spotify discontinued their apps API.

You won't just fail, you won't even be able to get started. How would users play music?

I'm not trying to be cynical, it just seems like a music listening app would need music.

Oh so you wanted to hear the complete business plan? Should have mentioned it that way. We already have the thumbs up from 5 small to medium scale music labels right now and would work on gaining more attention after this thing goes to its Alpha testing. Didn't notice you were trying to learn about our complete business model. Would you also want to know about our financial model? Just let me know if you would like that :) Thanks and a merry christmas

Haha "where will the music come from" is far from me asking about your complete business plan.

It seems like you might need to work on your community skills if you're planning to build a community. I asked as clear and polite as possible and you get all snarky.

Oh well, enjoy your new app, and keep posting updates here when you're ready for feedback!

Oh I am sorry if you felt that way. Maybe, my words appeared rough. I didn't intend to appear that way though. Apologies.

And definitely, I posted it here to get feedback, and ofcourse I took your comment as a constructive feedback. I am planning to contact Armada music and spinning records since EDM has always been the crowd snatcher from long so focusing on that first.

Once again, apologies, if my comment seemed off-beat

I like the idea of listening to the same song. Often when i find a new gem i'll send the song to friends now i can just invite them. I'm not going to give any feedback on the wireframe but i don't really like the logo :D could i maybe give a swing at it to see if i can come up with something better?

Definitely I would love that. Oh thank you so much for trying to help me out with this. I am not very good with logo designing so it was just something I tried on my own. If you would like more information on this project or would want to be a more integral part of it, please drop me an email at hello@muswe.com. Thank you so much.
