Definitely agree that it sucks that logos are many times perceived as pretty little icons that are tacked on products/services/events, rather than parts of identity systems that should be expressed through every facet.
In the same spirit, I stumbled across this ad from a logo competition by Sony from 1981. 30K designers submitted, none of them won.

This is so important. I don't understand why the super well-known and influential graphic designers in Japan don't oppose this the same way Japanese architects opposed Zaha Hadid's terribly expensive stadium plans
