Great product design but how does it work ?

7 years ago from , UX Designer

So AirBnB acquired Lapka, the brilliant industrial design firm from Russia. I was browsing through their products and came across this amazing product with great user experience design and industrial design.

Heres the thing. It doesn't need bluetooth pairing or any other sort of user initiated connection. Anyone knows how it works ?> I suspect they use "ultrasound" for connection or communicating info with the mobile app as thats one of the tech specs.

like clinkle was doing, but with this thing, you're blowing into it and could naturally generate a sound-wave for free.

From an off hand conversation with someone involved, they use a proprietary sound protocol. And it works very well.

Interesting. But something so proprietary to work it must already be a feature or technically supported by the phone in which the app works. So I wonder if such means of communication exists in our phones albeit not known to the public.

It uses the phones built in speaker and microwave to generate and receive sounds in a particular pattern. That pattern is in their proprietary pre-agreed upon format. There is no other hardware in play, so theoretically anyone with the proper motivation can make something similar happen.

Thanks Sri, this is believable. Have you come across such means of comm before in any other app ?

This is a wild guess: since by "ultrasound" they can detect which devices are yours [by being near the BAM over some time period], they can safely assume that they should send notifications to "your" device.

No pairing it doesn't mean no downloading the App, so I am sure they can double check which BAM device was near the phone when the app loaded, and "touching the fog" methods which give out some amount of certainty that they have found the right person.
