I think showing the case is a great UX pattern, much better than a changing icon, even if the icon was done properly.
That's a fair point, but I definitely feel the same way as him about how jarring it is for the keyboard to constantly be changing under your fingers.
That to me is great...
The joy of subjective design :)
Mechanical keyboards never changed cases.
They also didn't have emojis, showed numbers and symbols when you clicked a modifier key, were multilingual, auto-corrected or showed suggestions as you typed. I thought we were past the point where all UIs need to be strictly modeled after standards set long before there were any screens.
Typography was established without screens.
