I just noticed this on Facebooks event pages. When you respond can't go on an event you get a button to message the inviter.
This gives users a little kick to respond and send a message.

This is great. I always felt bad "declining" an event invitation when I simply couldn't go.
Yes sweet indeed, this at least - in a way - makes it possible to give a reason for declining. I'm unsure wether messaging directly is the way to go, maybe a bit to 'obtrusive'? The possibility to leave something more static like a note(in some way) might be an alternative option.
Someone recently brought it to my attention that you must first hit "attending" before you can hit "maybe".
Not sure if that is entirely true though.
