    I tried to enjoy the beautiful and engaging imagery of this article, and the incredible view it's giving me into parts of the world and ways of life I can only hope to experience, all from the safety of my desk, but all I could think about was how the modern homogeneity of the web and proliferation of similar, albeit successful, forms is like a cancer that needs to be eviscerated if we want to save the medium and create anything meaningful again.

      I wish sites like these allowed for far more creativity within their template-based systems. I think the basic look is good, but because the templates are absolutely rigid, there is no uniqueness to any article. Every piece is cranked through the same mill and come out looking utterly dull.

        Exposure and Storehouse are my go-to's for releasing photos. Still template based but very good typography and grid. Your photos make the posts unique on these sites, they are not meant for designers, so ease of use and flexible ways to display photos are the top priorities.

          That's the thing: they definitely have ease of use down, but it's at the expense of flexibility. We used Exposure last Fall to share photos of a trip we'd been on, and both my gf and I were frustrated with the lack of control in the grid. We'd place photos in the grid, and after resizing the window some photos would blow up to take the full width while others would be half or third size alongside others. This would put photos that were not our favorites in a position of prominence, while others that we loved were kept small. We just got back from another trip, and because of this we will not be using Exposure again.

          Just because we're not designers doesn't mean every single hero image text on every one of these sites has to be centered vertically and horizontally. Give me more choices and control darnit.

            Then you should try Storehouse, Exposure is doing the best it can with such tiny team. If you want something so customized, consider building your own site.

            A platform for everyone is a platform for no one. These sites aren't going to please everybody. They have their niche and are able to create revenue, you are just not in that niche.

    I went to South East Asia for two months last year, and I am incredibly sad I missed the opportunity to go to Myanmar. Since they only opened the border a few years ago, now is the time to go there to see SE Asia how it really used to be. If you get the chance, do it, and then tell us all about it!
