I like this as an option, but I do worry about quickly checking time and battery.

Agreed completely. I turned off the menu bar and went into an odd panic not seeing those 2 data.
Used Ubersicht ( http://tracesof.net/uebersicht/ ) to add that info to my desktop. Feeling pretty good without the menu bar now.

Do you find El Capitan Stable enough to try out?
Erik Terwan, over 8 years ago
I'm running it on a mid 2010 MacBook (not my main machine) and it's running great! Have not found any major bugs, just minor beauty issues.

Yup did my 2014 15" first. Installed it on my iMac at work today. #yolo

OOOH that looks nice. I was actually thinking that would be a nice compromise built in to the OS, but a plugin works too.
Is there a reason you put it on the left side instead of the right? That's where my eyes go out of habit.

Looks better on the right for sure. But I use my desktop as an inbox and the icons were slamming up on them there.

If this is real, it sounds like such an awesome option. Though I wonder how this would play out in practice (would no longer be able to get the small but helpful bits of information about time, battery, active app info, wifi connection, etc.)

I commented above. But tl:dr http://tracesof.net/uebersicht/ becomes very relevant now

This pretty cool. Thanks for the heads up, man. Any benefits to using this over Geektool?

I just found the widgets easier to style. It's all css with Ubersicht

I had the same question above. I figured I wouldn't be the only one. wifi connection isn't as needed on a quick glance basis for me, but battery is another good one.
A cool approach would be to only show battery once it gets down to "alert" levels. Could apply the same function to wifi / BlueTooth, "only show if disconnected".

This would send me into a panic; I like the consistency of the menu bar, having it disappear and reappear will make me feel like something is broken or I'm in a full-screen.
FYI I'm not a fan of spaces or expose, that might say more about me though

I'm a bit confused about the motivation for this. Clicking what used to be the 'Maximize' button already makes the program go fullscreen, hiding both the dock and menu bar in the process. What advantage does hiding the menu bar in normal use have other than increasing the effort required to get to options and information in non-fullscreen programs?

Less cognitive load throughout your daily usage?
My menubar is pretty crowded, but I guess I would freak out for about 2 weeks while I get used to it

Interesting angle, hadn't considered that

You should definitely try Bartender :)

Thanks for the heads up, will try it out — although I always tend to abandon these OSX customizing apps eventually.
Neil Pullman, over 8 years ago I think the full screen mode you're describing is Spaces-level of full screen. That is, you won't have two apps sharing the same desktop. All or nothing.
I think this allows you to position multiple app windows however you need while reclaiming that eighth-ish inch of space and/or removing the visual/mental burden of your menu bar.
Mike Wheaton, over 8 years ago Does anyone have a shot/video of this in action? I maximize my windows so they're right under the menu bar. Hide the menu bar and I'm just going to see a strip of desktop. And going full-screen on an app already hides the menu bar.

You can now place your windows all the way at the top of the screen, the menu bar will overlay.

Nice option! In addition I will like to choose the transparency %, I think it can be nice set it to full transparent.

Has the beta rolled out yet?
Whitney Helpert, over 8 years ago Nope. Wait until July. You can torrent first build an set up on 2nd drive just for fun.

Thanks, mate :)

Yes, it's out. You can download it from the member center.

Sadly, it's still "Coming soon" for me :(

It's been hidden on full-screen apps since Lion so I guess this is pretty consistent.
