PSA: Stop hiding your preview images with crazy hover transitions.

8 years ago from , UX designer, Azavea

You're portfolio preview images are awesome. Your crazy, 5 second long, overlay transitions on hover are not.

I'm trying to see your portfolio, please don't make me find the perfect spot on your site for my mouse to sit just to keep from triggering those transition.

If you must have the transitions, make the time to transition out almost immediate.

I'd rather not call any one particular site out, so I won't. Just trying to give some general feedback.

Keep being cool everyone.

haha. It's really strange that no one is giving a small peace of tiny fuck about how bad hacking scroll is, a million articles about how bad it is and everyday I see a new product/website with that shit :(

Someone should make a version of desingernews that hijacks the scroll, then we'll see some changes in behavior ;)

I think I read a study on Neilson Norman about hover animations, the results back up how you feel. Simply put, it's bad practice. Almost universal annoyance is gained from using them.

Ever since I read that I have been quite conscious of how I react when I come across a site doing this and I found I almost always end up trying to avoid triggering it more than I ever think about what it's displaying. Pinterest is a prime example for me, I'm constantly trying to hide my cursor in a gutter to prevent it from happening.

If reading a title or name of a project was going to make me want to click through, then just display the title as a permanent element. If it isn't going to convince me to click, leave the damn thing out of it.

You should suck it up and list some examples. They'll only benefit from it.

First one that comes to mind is http://thegreatdiscontent.com. The content is wonderful, but I want to see the images. And then the grid system they set up means I have to keep moving my cursor around if I want to scroll down. Just a personal thought though, it's not like I'm never going on the site again.

I'm not following...? On the site you just linked, I initially see all the images and can scroll down easily without moving my cursor. Is that not the same behavior for you? Only on hover are they covered & reveal the title, which I find the most annoying attribute of that website.

Not sure what screen size you're using, but for me when the page opens my mouse automatically triggers the hover animation.

Damn, this is silly! It just feels broken.

It might be a little heavy handed, but it doesn't feel broken to me.

Dribbble. Great, you've covered the whole preview (that I was just scrolling to see) to show me the title and when it was posted. Super good use of space.

        Finally someone said it.

But Dribbble makes it quite easy to position your mouse so you can scroll w/o triggering any effect so there's that.

That said, I still find it annoying.

I don't want to position my mouse, I just want it to work. Also, I have a chrome extension to view everything in @2x size by default, which makes it even worse.

I'm getting tired of this on a lot of sites, not just portfolios. +1.

    Totally agree, however, 1st line:

"You're portfolio" = You are portfolio. Should be "Your", as in next line. Sorry for the nitpick

Same thinking here. I think those are the most usefulness things you might use on a website. Of course in some places they might work. But in most cases they are just annoying.

Or at least make the whole image clickable and not just the anchor link text...

    Are drawer menus bad too?

Ok I hear you loud and clear: So I'm gunna hide my work so it takes a bunch of just clicks to see an image of my work. I'll fill my home page with pictures of my face, how I work, and icons...tons of icons.
