I'll never understand why this guy is classified as a Web designer. It's so obviously he's an illustrator that codes.

      Why would you say so?

He designs things for the web, does that not make him a web designer? Also, is he not allowed to be both a web designer and an illustrator?

As far as his design work goes, I'd say he's simply a designer who spans different mediums. The lines are getting much more blurred these days.

And although I don't always agree with him, he seems to be one of the foremost thinkers about how to design for the web, so I'd say he's very well qualified for the medium, arguably more than most.

How the hell did he resist the urge to parallax the fuck out of those homepage images?

Hmm, the homepage looks like a high school collage art project. Not very forward thinking at all. Reminds me of the early days of Geocities.

I think he's dating himself, especially after his piece about not wanting to learn new technologies and evolving with it as a designer. Which in this day and age of rapid technological progress would make you obsolete very quickly.

I sense a lot of thought went into this site. I quite like the aesthetic, too.

Ahem...he also designed this... So... Maybe he just remembers something that we all forget...it's your little space on the web. Have fun with it, and make it yours. It's one of the few things in life that's allowed to be whatever you want it to be.

    ;)

I have a love/meh relationship with old Frankie C (I was thoroughly unimpressed with the Shape of Design, and confounded by the fuss about it), but he's clearly a talented designer and I really like this latest iteration. The previous one seemed a bit disjointed and over influenced by his admiration for Eames at the time.

Slightly annoying as i'm just in the process of redesigning my own site and there's a lot of similarity between what I had been planning and this, so i'm inevitably going to look a bit of a knob.

I think this one suits him well, wonder how long it will last!

What unimpressed you about the book? I'm curious to hear your opinion. (I didn't read it - It just didn't interest me enough to buy it.)

It was preachy, verbose, and overly illustrative. Sure the writing was "pretty", but it seemed to be a lot of frosting on top of a few very basic design ideas. That said, it's certainly elegantly written.

Yep, Adam pretty much nailed it. Very little substance to it in my opinion. A handful of ideas taken from 2-3 other books, just rearranged. It almost felt like he'd managed to sell his masters thesis for $90K (although the word count might run a little short).

Don't get me wrong, I think Frank is uniquely talented, and he definitely has a lot to offer, but this really missed the mark for me. Form and hype massively over substance. I feel that the people who wet themselves over it don't do a lot of other reading, there really wasn't anything new in there.

The book itself is beautiful, though. Materials, binding, design, illustrations and typography are just gorgeous.

His style reminds me of the new brand identity of Spotify http://www.fastcodesign.com/3043547/spotifys-new-look-signals-its-identity-shift
