Show DN: The New Disqus

over 8 years ago from , fraud

Hi DN!

This week we released the new Disqus!

Historically, we've been known as a commenting widget, allowing websites and blogs to use our platform to build strong communities centered around not just their content, but the great discussions happening below them. This is the beginning of a new Disqus, a destination where those discussions and communities are gathered in one place. It helps you find interesting, high quality discussions happening all over the web right now.

Additionally, we've started providing our own communities (similar to a sub-reddit) the first two being about Fashion/Beauty and Movies, with many more to come. In the future, you'll even be able to start your own communities on Disqus, we think it's going to be pretty neat.

So, go check it out! Let us know what you think! Tell us what you love, what you hate, maybe leave some cat GIF comments or whatever. We're eager for feedback! <3

That feed is so incredibly low on contrast between the various panels/replies etc I find it difficult to visually distinguish between one bit and another. Definitely something I'd look at tweaking.

The top left portion of the cards, where there's 2 lines of info all crammed together - that's bothering me. I think that singular area is making this entire site feel cluttered in what would otherwise be a very clean and lovely site. But really, that's a minor complaint. I wish I had more to complain about! This is excellent looking. Though, I've always loved Disqus.

Nice! Have you guys ever considered offering "product reviews" as a part of your comment widget? Like, you know, with "5 stars review" and stuff.

I think it looks great, and I've been a Disqus user for many years now. I always log in when I want to comment on someone else's blog, and I love how easy it is!

However I have a totally non-confrontational question about the direction of the product. I'm wondering why someone would choose to take part in discussions in this new Disqus community about movies over one of the many other places where conversations are already alive and kicking and have been for years, such as Reddit, RT or IMDB?

    Great job!

My In-depth critique. I now have a place where I checked out new sneakers and read about dwarf planets in our solar system.

    Alec, great work there.

I understand the space earning with less padding, i made some changes in the top of feed items.

    Nifty.

So do all the many many popular sites that use your widget have to opt-in to be indexed on your new site?

Why is Disqus moving into this space? Seems like a VC push to make some more revenue?

Feels like your old commenting product just got thrown out and replaced with an aggregator - if a new blogger came to the site now they probably wouldn't see that right box saying 'Add it to your site'. I'm guessing integration of Disqus will drop now? Would love to see the stats in a few months of this style of homepage/product.

But love the site design - not sure on the future of this pivot.

    Looks great!

A couple of things I noticed/thought… I feel like the ‘Recent Comments (x)’ should link to the discussion instead of having to find the ‘View Discussion’ link. Also the comment anchor links don't seem to be working in Chrome.

Hi Alec, great work. But when I click on "Inbox" in the header I'm directed to the Sign in page (https://disqus.com/profile/login/?next=https%3A%2F%2Fdisqus.com%2Fhome%2F) but there isn't a way to return to the homepage. Even if I click in the return button of Google Chrome it stays on the same page.

And just like that, Disqus enters the market as a reddit HN, DN competitor.

Interesting to see how products evolve.

Super eager to try out. How do you set up your own community?

We haven't fully implemented "user created channels/communities" yet, but we're working on it!

For now, to create your own community you simply install Disqus on your website or blog.
