    I really like all the thought put into this — clearly, it's the nearly the same thing the guys at Tapbots were thinking.

    I love your stuff man! I just looked on your site and see that you were in YSDN! I'm a first year in YSDN right now hoping to get into UX design as well!

    Any advice for my next few years in YSDN?

    I really like your direction with the Designer News app, I might try my hand at an android redesign sometime soon

    Overall a great no-bullshit redesign. The one thing I don't like is icons. They look good but why are they different in compact and regular sidebars? I can see why you'd want them to be different sizes but style should remain the same. Good job anyways!

      Great question! The short answer is time constraints.

      I designed the expanded sidebar originally, matching the style of the Finder sidebar pretty closely, including partially-filled icons. As I continued with the design the sidebar evolved a bit, but stayed very similar in style to Apple's apps. The collapsed sidebar came later, and required a few tweaks to the icons to make them work at the larger size. The highlighted cell style didn't work well with the row of icons, and the filled icon style seemed too heavy at that size, so the style evolved further. Given more time, I would have probably made more changes to the expanded sidebar to more closely match the collapsed version.
